News Bill and Ted Face the Music Officially Announced

Looks like a lot of fun. I like how they appear to be having the daughters picking up historical figures, like their dads did in the first movie.

So if Bill & Ted can't overcome their writer's block and write the song to end all songs... then perhaps their daughters will... :vulcan:

Huh. I never knew that Bill and Ted co-creator Chris Matheson was the son of Richard Matheson (I Am legend, The Incredible Shrinking Man, What Dreams May Come, Star Trek The Original Series: The Enemy Within). It was Richard Matheson who convinced his son and his writing partner Ed Solomon that the Bill and Ted characters could carry an entire movie. Excellent!

I didn't realize until I read a summary of the panel, that Matheson and Solomon actually created the characters of Bill & Ted as part of an improv skit that they performed themselves.

I didn't know that, but it makes perfect sense. They seem like something a couple of guys would dream up to amuse themselves. (Plus they're kind of similar to SNL's Wayne and Garth, although I always considered them an inferior knockoff of the Great Ones.)

Nothing can be decanonized in B&T - the very comic premise makes that impossible.

The newspaper montage goes into a bit of detail on exactly how Bill & Ted ended society's problems (environment, Middle East conflict, economy), and were clearly the largest group of all time, causing the Dow Jones to hit record lows and record highs after rumors of a split occurred and then were debunked. They end up being the first people on Mars.

It was an outlandish fun idea that fulfilled the conceit of the first two movies, and was played with a bit in a Bogus Journey follow-up comic, but if they really did all that... and then were pretty much forgotten by society and ended up playing wedding receptions and having Captain Logan say it was all a deluded fantasy... that would be way more outlandish, in my estimation. Either Part 3 exists or the newspaper montage exists, but they seem incompatible (on the basis of the trailers).

Maybe there's time travel involved, maybe there actually is some sort of explanation, maybe some of the details will be included (Missy and De Nomolos could be a fun ref), but on the whole it doesn't seem likely.

I think I read a comment from one of the filmmakers saying the newspaper montage was no longer canonical.

Maybe it symbolizes Bill & Ted's expectations about their future as of the end of Bogus Journey rather than their actual, documented future? I could imagine the new film opening with a recap of that montage and then having B&T's voiceovers saying something like, "This is the totally excellent future we thought we had, but here's what really happened instead."

You've watched the movies, and you post this?

Maybe there's time travel involved...

Duh.
