Big Brother 17

Right now I like the balance the game has between importance of strategy and importance of comps. If last place was the automatic nominee and the HoH couldn't choose the nominee it'd shift the balance more toward the comps and away from strategy.

Well, that was a brutal HOH competition. If James had won, I'd bet that Austin and Vanessa would be on the block. As it is, I guess that the plan is for someone to veto John and backdoor Vanessa?

That nomination speech... wow. I can see that the people who were bewildered must never have seen The Crow. Some of what Austin said was straight from that movie.

Meg was (briefly) seen laughing hysterically at the speech, so I suspect she recognised the reference...

I continue to be impressed with Vanessa--always seemingly two steps away from getting evicted, but managing to save herself every time. You can complain that she leans on a limited set of social moves (e.g. emotional outbursts), but you can't say it doesn't get her results.

The "BB Takeover" gimmick must've really fizzled for TPTB to drop it so quickly. My partner and I were convinced the season would be full of CBS cross-promotional synergy, but hardly any of that came to pass--even though it's pretty easy to think of theme weeks/competitions based on other CBS series.

I liked the Phil Keoghan takeover, just because I like him and The Amazing Race. But some of what they did is stuff I couldn't be bothered to care about. I rather suspect the houseguests may have complained about being constantly woken up to do some ridiculous "party" thing.

Has there ever been anyone who's been on all three CBS shows (Big Brother, Amazing Race, & Survivor)?

Can you imagine the hosts of these shows trading off? Keoghan was one of the people considered to host Survivor, but can you imagine Julie Chen trying to do that? :guffaw:

I'm not sure there's anyone who's been on two of them who I'd want to see on the third. Brendon, Rachel, Jeff, and Jordan I want nowhere near Survivor. Rob and Amber on Big Brother would either result in Rob being voted out first or him steamrolling the entire season. I guess Jeff and Jackie would be okay on Survivor. I guess Hayden and his girlfriend on Amazing Race could be fun.

Vanessa is having some success playing the Dan game, though not nearly as well or as entertainingly. The game where everybody is targeting you all the time but you have enough of an established relationship with everybody that you can find some angle to deflect attention away from you and you're never quite anyone's highest priority. If she doesn't get backdoored I'd watch for her to start playing the "Austwins are power of three" card relentlessly.

Who does everyone want to come back? I'd root for Jackie just because she's the only jury member who was hit by some random luck instead of being evicted as a result of a gameplay mistake.

Looking forward to Zingbot. So much material this season. Austin and Steve particularly.

I'd like this week's evictee or Shelli to come back. I hated Shelli as part of Clelli, but she's going to be gunning for Victoria and making no secret of it.

Okay, did anyone tell the truth in this last episode? And if Austin's girlfriend is his ex-girlfriend (as in not current), why is Liz so upset?

Did it ever have offspring?

I actually don't like this "zingbot" nonsense. There's fun, but this stuff is just mean.

This season's Zingbot did seem to cross the line of actually being mean more than past seasons.

IIRC two seasons ago the Zingbot veto gimmick was that he was creating a Zingbot Jr.

I have never seen Zingbot as a very important addition to the show. I think it's bad if it reveals something about someone that damages their game in some way.

It's just one of the more fun things they do in the show.

I was hoping Jackie or Shelli would come back in, that would have been more interesting than just a reset of last week. I like Vanessa's strategy this week, and I don't know how John and Steve could possibly actually trust Vanessa now. Maybe just out of desparation. But this puts her in a great position for the double eviction where she can play either group against the other depending on who wins HoH. She's made some mistakes but she's been the only player whose game is interesting this season.

Vanessa has definitely put herself in a good position. She will have a problem if one of the nominations changes though.

On a side note, I cannot stand Vanessa's crying every time someone lies to her, so I have to root against her despite her strong game play.

I didn't really have a preference for the returning juror. Maybe leaning to Jackie because she was just starting to really play the game when she so suddenly got booted. Oh well.

I've been rooting for Vanessa most of the season, although I still think she should have backdoored Austin and blamed it on Shelli and Clay (who were the first to actually float the idea IIRC). Her game hasn't been the same since. And I think if she makes it to the end, nobody will vote for her because she will have double crossed them all.

I actually think James is playing the best game so far. Strong competitor, big moves when in power, but his social game is so strong that nobody seems to really dislike him either. If he survives this week and makes it to the end, I'm not sure anyone could beat him in the voting.

Of the people left, they're my two favorites. If one of the Austwins bumbles their way to the money I might cry. Ugh.
