^ Yeah. I just can't get over my long simmering distrust of laugh tracks. I view them as an attempt to tell the audience what's funny (especially for shows that use the old machine-generated kind, and not an audience).
I don't suppose this show would be quite the same if the laughter were removed, though.

Seriously? Do they pump laughing gas into the studio during the shoot? People aren't meant to laugh like that.

Um, yeah, that's what it means when it says "Filmed before a live studio audience".
^ Sometimes shows will not actually have the audience in the room with the filming, but play it back later and then edit the resulting laughter back into the broadcast.

Well often on these shows, audiences are encouraged to laugh louder than they might otherwise, or they are primed by a comedian beforehand. Especially with talk shows.
In any case, two of the best sitcoms of all time-- Cheers and Seinfeld-- both used a studio audience, and it certainly didn't hurt their quality.
I've been enjoying it lately. I had avoided it for years because of the awful fucking theme song. Can't stand the Barenaked Shitheads and I do find the Big Bang Theory itself makes about as much sense as creation. Double whammy for the opening.
But with the brilliant dialog of Jim Parsons and the eye candy of Kaley Cuoco and some bizarre Trek alumni casting I am convinced enough that it's not just another shitcom, and besides 30 Rock, the only one worth watching.

At first, I didn't care at all for the show, feeling it was yet another way of Hollywood to ridicule those of us who like sci-fi, etc. But the my very geek oldest got hooked on it, so I started watching. And I started enjoying it. It still lampoons much of the "geek" "nerd" culture, but much of it really is true. It's not my favorite TV show, not even my favorite comedy... but it's a fun way to have a touchpoint with my kids and friends.
I can understand it not appealing to many folks, but as tired as this cliche sounds.... different strokes for different folks.
"Priya" was also sharp, with a sultry voice that gets your attention. 
One of my favorite bits is the gag of Melissa Rauch providing the voice for Howard's mom. Cracks me up.

Yes, but Mrs. Wolowitz is done by Carol Ann Susi. (you can see her in an episode of THAT 70's SHOW final season when Jackie tries to get a job with Mary Tyler Moore's character. She's the receptionist).
O god.. Melissa Rauch in Mrs. Wolowitz mode kills me every time.. she has that down perfectly 
(especially the scene where she stay's overnight at Howard's and makes him breakfast with a little shouting match with Mrs. Wolowitz.. cracks me up everytime).
I think the nerd humor is done well and respectfully.. sure they do jokes about nerds but if you can't laugh about your subculture then you have a problem. They often hit the right spot and since i'm a member of that subculture and hang around occasionally in a gaming store i know what i'm talking about.. some scenes seemed eerily familiar

It had this bunch of lame-ass "nerds" sniffing around with nasally voices pretending like they're clever, and one of them is really tall and thin and an irreversibly giant asshole but everyone just calls him "Sheldon."
But maybe that wasn't it. Maybe it was "Sex and the City."
