Spoilers Beyond Enterprise vs Into Darkness Enterprise

Fastback enterprise--that makes the Ent-D cab-forward.

I don't understand this at all. I thought the point of the Swarm was that even the mightiest ship can be brought down by the relentless onslaught of thousands of small vessels. I don't see why they needed to make the Enterprise look "more vulnerable".

Ugh. That's Star Wars. I want Trek ships to swat things like swarm ships like bugs. They must be neutronium.

At the end of Into Darkness, we saw that the Enterprise was repaired after being trashed by Khan and had
- A wider impulse engine
- New details on the nacelles.

When we see her again in Beyond
- Additional windows on the sides of the saucer
- Window size has been increased
- The nacelles have been shrunken
- The nacelles pylons now bend backwards
- The neck and nacelle pylons have been made thinner
- New phaser bank configuration

Are we suppose to believe that the repaired ship at the end of Into Darkness is the same one seen in Beyond with the additional changes being the result of retcon
Or
The Enterprise did in fact had a second refit during her first five year mission, which added these additional changes

But the prime movie Enterprise looked more the same over the 6 movies, where this Enterprise has what, 4 big upgrades over 3 movies and 4 in universe years?

My feeling is we're supposed to pretend that what we saw at the end of STID was the same as what we got in STB. Sort of how in TSFS Enterprise suddenly had way more patched up battle damage than she actually suffered in TWOK.
Same here. Just as the Bird of Prey has a new bridge, and the Enterprise-E undergoes "invisible" upgrades.

One thought to have regarding the big E in this universe is that she might be a constant work in progress. As the most advanced ship in the fleet via the 2009 movie, she might be a prototype constantly undergoing development and testing technologies for the rest of the fleet to benefit from. She may be the only one of her class, built on the Constitution pattern.

I'm a little disappointed we haven't seen many other fleet scenes depicting other Starfleet ships in Into Darkness, but I did catch at least one other ship moored in Yorktown when the Enterprise is mooring up. It looks like an Armstrong type, but I'm hoping another look can reveal another sister ship to the Big-E.

The new Enterprise-A, while similar, does have some notable differences from her predecessor. People seem to be remembering different features about the craft... what I remember is some kind of raised portion behind the bridge with some glasswork, the "spine" afterward on the bridge is wider, and the primary-secondary hull connection parts look like they had docking cleats similar to the Ent-D. We're not given a good look at her, so her proportions were weird, but I'm eager to sit down for a second viewing and pay more attention.

I also like to believe that she had no name when she was being built, and if the Enterprise hadn't been trashed, the A would have become the Excelsior...

Aside from the aforementioned damaged spots between TWOK and TSFP, there other changes. The bridge changed between practically every movie (including between II and III).

The Enterprise-E seemingly underwent a refit after each movie.

It's kind of a weird refit though. Starfleet Operations: "Captain Kirk, the enterprise is called to starbase 12 for a refit. This will include making the ship more vulnerable to attack, by reducing it's structural integrity by 43%." Kirk: "Mr sulu, best speed to starbase 12."

Thats a strangely pescimistic way of looking at it.

Picking apart details as people do, why not focus on the lines in the film? There's one in the captains log intro that mentions the Enterprise is being pushed to it's technological limits - something new as Enterprise has been pushing hard for longer than most - and Scotty's having to patch it up and keep it going.

Instead of someone thinking "You know what'll make us weaker?" the most logical answer would be "what can keep us going longer to better fulfil the mission parameters?"

Assuming the Enterprise did indeed get another refit during the five year mission and it wasn't a retcon,
did they replace the neck, nacelles, and pylons individually
or
did they just detach the saucer and replace the rest of the ship entirely

I think the in universe reasoning behind the changes was to give the enterprise new warp engines. The previous nacelles had been overworked, and no-longer efficient. New nacelles were designed to match the esthetic of the flagship. As the new engines were less heavy, there was no need for bulky neck and pylons to keep the ship together in space flight. The ships phasers were upgraded to fend off any attack. No ship would have survived the swarm attack anyway.
