Better of the two TOS pilots?

The Cage has a lot going for it, but despite the fact that its considered a more thoughtful story, WNMHGB has better acting, drama and also includes a message.

RAMA

"The Cage" all around except for the shots of the 3' Enterprise model. That bulbous lower half of the primary hull saucer was not a good look for the Gray Lady.

Very hard choice, I love them both. But WNMHGB has my vote. I like how it forces us to confront our own demons rather than expecting all our woes to be externally manifest. Not that we don't have external demons, but I like the humbling message.

I chose The Cage, but not necessarily because it's the better of the two pilots. In the 35 years I've watched Star Trek in syndication, I've probably seen WNMHGB more than 50 times. However, The Cage was always the holy grail of Star Trek for me. Until the late '80s, I never had a chance to see the whole episode. I never saw the full-color version until I bought the DVDs a couple of years ago. For me, The Cage is still fresh and new since I've only seen the complete episode a handful of times.

The Cage. Barely. And I'm probably going to hate myself later for voting for either one. They're both exemplary.

I voted for WNMHGB, though The Cage had some strong points, such as showing No. 1's hidden attraction to Pike.

One time when my dad and I were watching WNM I was describing to him how Mitchell and Dehner were trying to be gods. Dad said, "God doesn't like people trying to play God." I said, "This episode tells why."

I liked both but chose Where No Man Has Gone Before because it was Kirk's ship and it was more suspenseful. :)

The Cage, absolutely. Rejected by NBC for being "too cerebral" --- ha! best reason ever to vote for one.

Seriously, it rocked...a fascinating alien culture, the Talosians, Number One, the menagerie, it was much better and more plausible to me, although both require imagination.

I like both, but I think WNMHGB is more representative of the series that followed. And I prefered its more polished execution as well.

I love them both, but "The Cage" just doesn't 'feel' like Star Trek. It's totally humorless and the characters don't have any real depth at all. I do like the landing party uniforms and the look of the bridge.

I wonder how "The Cage" would play if Shatner starred instead of Hunter?
