Better Call Saul, the TV series

I was wondering the whole time, what’s the point of keeping Lyle there for hours manipulating him to thin he did a bad job cleaning the friar?

Then it hit me. He was so angry he had to give up nearly a million dollars he wanted to torture someone. Making Lyle think he failed to clean the friar was a The Good Place style form of torture.

I worked in a few restaurants in High School/College, now I think that maybe my managers were drug kingpins who were in the process of losing a ton of money.
At the time I just thought they were dicks.

But the asshole bosses would have ordered you to stay and clean, no? Not manipulated you to choose to yourself.

I don’t get why Howard tried to hire Jimmy. Particularly in the light of his stay at Davis & Main. Nothing we know about his character suggests he’d be remotely willing to take on a guy like Jimmy just because he’s so win over by staffing up for people who have made mistakes. What does he gain?

Is he just worried about the optics and effect on his firm’s reputation because he changed his name? Trying to kill the name change by buying him off with a job?

Yup, I picked up on that right away. Gus channeled his inner fury at poor Lyle because he had no other outlet. I thought it was brilliant. :D

However, what I was confused about was the LOST-esque ending with Mike waking up in some pueblo community, clearly far away from where those fucking punks who mugged him for making them look weak in the previous episode. Seems to me Mike deliberately walked by them again because he wanted to get punished for losing his cool in front of Kaylee and Stacey not letting him babysit again right away.

I also didn't get what was going on with the cold opening and the bowling balls until the reveal. Saul ain't liking this happy-go lucky form of Howard.

I wasn’t clear on whether Mike expected to easily win that fight or not.

I didn’t get that ending either, unless the implication is his kidney got stolen? Either that or Gus had him followed and somebody saved him. Like we may be about to meet the doctor who tended to them in BBS4.

I was thinking along similar lines, and I was waiting for him to appear and say something. Maybe next week? Or maybe it's something else entirely.

The bowling balls were perfect gift for Howard. :D

I just happened upon this great insight in the comments section (from rtozier2011) of the A.V. Club review:

"This [the HHM offer] is Saul’s Gray Matter moment. He could have got rich (his original objective) the legit way by accepting the offer of his establishment superior, but instead he chose his own way, because it’s the only way to stick it to the man."

I’m not sure I agree with that interpretation. He had his shot at legitimate lawyerdom at Davis & Main. He knows at this point he couldn’t possibly conform to those guidelines.

Also I don’t like that interpretation of Walt’s past. He unlike Saul wanted the legitimate billions. He had an affair with Gretchen Schwartz and made a short sighted decision to step out then regretted it his entire life, thinking he deserved those Billions, with a B. If Walt had a shot at making those legitimately he would have chosen that over crime.

I'm guessing Mike wanted to be punished. Hell you could argue he might have been thinking suicide by gang given they could have easily killed him.

My first thought was that the pueblo was Gus' place. Now I'm wondering if its actually Lalo's. Maybe he was having Mike followed. We know he's intrigued by him. Insane theory time: Gus knows Mike's being followed and Mike being beaten up is part of a plan to insert him into Lalo's operation?

Re Howard offering Jimmy a job I have two thoughts. 1. Howard genuinely does think it would be a good idea to have a random wild card on the team for certain cases. 2. He feels the firm needs a McGill if it's going to remain HHM.

Howard has been a bit of a jerk on occasion, and yes he's 100% corporate guy, but he's never struck me as a truly bad person. The bowling balls say more about Jimmy's guilt and self loathing than Howard.

Kim adds another reason to hate herself by involving Saul in the Masa Verde matter. "I don't want any part of your schtick, Jimmy. Unless its useful to me." I'm kinda losing sympathy for her now.

I think he is still feeling guilty over the death of Chuck because of that letter and he is trying to do what he thinks is the right thing. Especially now that Jimmy has become Saul he can sort of see him going down a bad path but he doesn't want to make it look like pity yet I am also sure if he took the job he would try and control Jimmy in away that wouldn't damage the firm anymore.

My sympathy for Kim is increasing, she’s struggling heavily with whether the ends justifying the means. Last season it was a thrill addiction thing but now it’s an inability for her to live with herself for kicking a man out if his house.

Howard’s not a bad person but he is strictly business first and firm first. There’s no way he takes on risk to his business just out of guilt.

Richard Schwiker seeming like a really good guy all the sudden. I’m screaming at Kim, LISTEN TO HIM!

He basically told her “I know what you’re doing and instead of ending your career for it I’m going to invite you to just walk away”.

At this point if Kim is disgraced it’s her own fault unfortunately.

I'm beginning to get the feeling that Kim will end up with nothing. :(

I did love all the legal shenanigans Jimmy was pulling to delay Mesa Verde.

Damn, Kim is walking right up to the edge. I understand why she publicly argued with Rich about what she was doing, despite knowing Rich was onto her, but it's probably going to bite her in the ass in the long run. Ruining her reputation and career seems to be her fate and I already hate it. :(

Mike being forced to to quietly recuperate frustrated the hell out of him. Good thing he was able to find little projects to work on, although I loved how he tried to make a makeshift charger and the senora who he was staying with simply gave him a charger (and miraculously the correct type he needed)!

Nice to see a dedication to Max, although the whole thing would only make sense to those who've already seen Breaking Bad.

Yup, that was hysterical.

In case no one noticed, the lead contractor during that whole thing was played by John DiMaggio of Bender Bending Rodriguez fame. :D

The irony is, Kim could do much more good in the long run if she just compromised on this guy,

Maybe she would just be happier as a public defender.
