I certainly wish it were the hugely popular and most watched Star Trek series ever. That might've justified the 13 year wait. As it is, I honestly doubt it's any better received that what UPN were putting out in its dying days. The fan devotion is there and always will be, just to see new episodes, no matter how much they screw it up. Barring the odd big screen blip on the radar, I think that the franchise is still struggling to recover from damage caused by the Paramount/Viacom split. Everything can be attributed to that, from not having further seasons of Enterprise made for another network, to really poor 40th and 50th Anniversary celebrations... to the lack of subsequent spin-offs, and the constant media presence that goes with it. If only to remind TV audiences that they need Star Trek in their lives, as much as following a neverending gallery of superheroes and blood thirsty fantasy epics.
I don't think ST: D is the best Trek ever, but it's certainly better than the majority of the 24th century era series (specifically VOY and TNG.) Someone at Forbes would also disagree with regards to ST: D 'popularity':

Just saying...
At this point, I would agree it's probably the best first season since TOS overall, but DS9, VOY, and ENT S1 all had a crowning episode that Disco just hasn't achieved. Maybe the finale?
IDK - I'd say the MU episodes (up to the point they turned Lorca from master manipulator into mustache twirling trope because of his 'need' for PU Burnham); were good - and they planned and telegraphed Lorca's MU reveal well regardless of how I feel about the ultimate resolution to his character arc. Also, the Mudd episode: Star Trek Discovery S1 Ep.7: "Magic to Make the Sanest Man Go Mad",
Those equate well to what I think was the best episode of ENT S1 - "Fallen Hero".
As for ST:YOY sorry, for me the series was crap front to back from day one. I've been watching Star Trek first run since 1969 (at age 6) and ST:VOY was the only Star trek series I gave up watching after "The 37's". I've seen other later VOY eps. recommended by friends here and the, but overall my opinion on that series hasn't changed.It's weird because I like ENT a lot (still my second favorite series after TOS) but that's provably because early one Rick Berman and Barannon Braga were so burned out - they sat back, took the cjhecks, and let others like Manny Coto and Mike Sussman have more control. (Hell, Braga went off to develop another project at the same time "The 4400" - and I wish he and Berman had kept there hands off the 4th season and allowed Manny Coto to do what he was originally planning for the finale instead of dusting off a bad finale B&B wrote when they thought ENT would be canned after S3, namely: "This Ain't The Valentine"...err, I mean "These Are The Voyages".
For me the top 3 seasons of the overall Star Trek franchise are:
TOS S1 <--- Was firing on all cylinders right out of the gate.
ENT S4 <--- And no, it wasn't 'fanwank' (IMO); they told some great stories (my favorite from that season being the "Babel One/United/Anear" mini arc); that made good use of a lot of previous Star Trek lore. I don't consider it fanwank because even if you were new to Star Trek, the stories stood well on their own. if you knew some of the lore they were incorporating into them, that was just a nice plus for longtime fans.
ST: D S1 <---- I'm still miffed they haven't even thrown us older fans a bone with maybe one real PU Constitution Class ship in one of their Fleet ship shots - same with the D7; but story and they've done okay with the characters overall and made an interesting story with only 14 episodes so far. I do wish they'd planned it just a tad better because wrapping up the War arc in just two episodes is a bit too fast (although maybe it's because I'd like to have seen Michelle Yeoh Captain the Discovery for more than one episode.

)
YMMV of course.
