Best Space-Based Sci-Fi Shows in the Last 25 Years

1. B5
2. DS9 (Tied with Farscape)
2. Farscape (Tied with DS9)
4. Doctor Who
5. NuBSG

DS9 is my favorite of the Trek Spinoffs, and deserves the spot over TNG, TNG
Honorable Mention - Space Above and Beyond

I'd bump Firefly. It wasn't on the air long enough to really prove itself. In its place I'd suggest putting Farscape on the list, which would go something like this:

1. Farscape
2. Battlestar Galactica (2003)
3. Star Trek: Deep Space Nine
4. Star Trek: The Next Generation
5. Red Dwarf

Red Dwarf is a comedy, but a space based one, and a very good one. I've certainly been interested in revisiting it more often than Babylon 5, which is an interesting if flawed series that I think has been superseded by other shows since.

I'd bump TNG, perhaps for Farscape. I know TNG was very popular in its day, but it honestly never connected to me quite as much as other shows. To this day I still haven't seen a lot of the later seasons.

Lots of love for Farscape so far--interesting. Also, not a lot of love for Firefly (although Harvey makes a good point--I'd argue that it did more in one season that most sci-fi shows do in their entire run).

I love that people are including Red Dwarf (which I'm not super familiar with) and Futurama (which I love). Maybe there's a good top 5 sci-fi comedies out there? If anyone wants to put one together as a guest blogger, let me know!

The only reason I'd question Firefly is because there are more than 5 shows worth considering. I have no problem ranking it among the top SF series of the last 25 years, it's just a question of whether it makes the top 5 or not.

I wish it was more than a top 5. And DS9 definitely deserves a spot, it's definitely good competition for BSG/B5.

1. Battlestar Galactica

2 Star Trek Deep Space Nine

3. Star Trek The Next Generation

4. Doctor Who (it's not as obviously space-based as the others on the list but it frequently has space-based stories, so I don't want to exclude it)

5. Firefly (would be higher if it had run for longer but I can't put it ahead of the above on the basis of 13 episodes)

6. Babylon 5 (I'm kind of surprised I'm not putting it higher but I don't think it's aged too well and I'm satisfied that the first 5 are better)

I liked but didn't love Voyager and was disappointed by the first two seasons of Enterprise, but the 3rd and 4th were good, though not great. Never watched Space: Above and Beyond. I suspect that had I watched Farscape I would have put it in the top 10. The Stargate shows never appealed to me.

I would bump TNG for DS9 in a heartbeat. Probably drop NuBSG for Farscape, as well. TNG may have been the more popular one, but it was just sterile and unambitious in comparison to DS9.

Hmm... My list:

1. Farscape
2. B5
3. BSG
4. ST:TNG
4. SG-1

Just off the list:
- Firefly (too short)
- DS9 (never grabbed me completely)

Babylon 5. Having Straczynski pretty much write it all kept the plot together, although it left the dialogue too undifferentiated.

Like Star Trek, Voyager was erratic but it has enough excellent episodes to rank.

Farscape was a wildly entertaining ride at the time, but I find I can't rewatch it at all.

There's no order to these. They're just my five favorites made within the timeframe.

Star Trek: The Next Generation
Babylon 5
Farscape
Red Dwarf
Doctor Who (old and new)

4. Star Trek: Deep Space Nine
3. Firefly
2. Babylon 5
1. Battlestar Galactica (RDM)

My favorite Sci Fi show of all time is Farscape, so I guess I'll go with that. I also like:

Star Trek: TNG
Star Trek: DS9
The first Season and a half of the recent Battlestar Galactica
Babylon 5

I really need another space based scifi show in my life. Not sure we're getting it any time soon.

I can tell I'm getting old when Blakes 7 is too old to include here...

1. Doctor Who
2.DS9
3. Babylon 5
4. TNG
5. Dunno perm one from Voyager (inconsistant) Firefly (overrated and not enough episodes) BSG (The Emperor's new clothes) Enterprise (bland but got better) Atlantis (fluff akin to Voyager) SGU (a lot of potential but undermined at evey level and took too long to get going) and SG1 (Went on too long)

Actually that's a pretty lame reason for exluding SG1 so in hindsight that'll be my #5

TNG
Farscape
Doctor Who
Futurama
BSG

And Red Dwarf isn't bad either.

A top five list without Farscape is wrong.
