I think my favourite season is season 5. A lot of my favourite episodes come in that season, and particularly the run of Violations, Connundrum, Powerplay, Ethics, The Outcast, Cause and Effect.

Yes I enjoyed season five as well. It had a nice run of varying story types. I like most of the episodes this season-Ensign Ro, Silicon Avatar, Disaster, The Game, Unification, Hero Worship, Violations, Conundrum, Power Play, Ethics, The Outcast, Cause and Effect, The First Duty, The Next Phase, I Borg, The Inner Light, Times Arrow even Imaginary Friend.

I know many criticize episodic tv programs especially in this day and age but TNG succeeded because they knew to vary the dynamics and have a mix of different stories from high concept plots to character dramas to fluff pieces to epic season finales so that you didn't fall into a formulaic rut like CSI.

I forget which I voted for, but after rewatching S3, I don't think it's the best one.

While I can't pick one season I think seasons 3 to 6 had the best batch of episodes on average. Season 7 had some classics (Lower Decks & The Pegasus) but on the whole it wasn't up to the level as the previous four seasons. Seasons 1 & 2 were so different it felt like you were watching another series!

I can't decide between Seasons 4 and 5. Modern Trek in its prime.

Agreed! Seasons 3 to 6 of TNG & seasons 4 to 7 of DS9 were the pinnacle of Star Trek if you ask me. The best of Voyager & Enterprise didn’t come close to what we got with TNG & DS9.

I voted for Season 2, by the way. I used to prefer some of the later seasons, but over recent years I've really come to appreciate S2 more. Characters hitting their stride, some great sci-fi stories and just plain good fun.

S3 has some of the best trek episodes ever (YE and BOTB), but I think the strongest season overall is season 5.

After closer examination, season 3, 4 and 6 are, in my estimation, the show's best. Season 4, in particular, the show's best season. They're the most consistently good seasons, with a large array of excellent and poignant stories piled up for our pleasure. The fifth one has some really good ones, but is not as strong as 4 or 6, and is not consistent for half the time, 2 was great for bringing in the greatness to TNG but not quite there, and 7 ruined itself with all those family episodes. That said, season 1 of TNG is, easily, the show's worst season. Aside from a handful of episodes, its also largely forgetable. Thank goodness they improved afterwards.

So, here's how I'd rank them:

1. S4
2. S6
3. S3
4. S5
5. S2
6. S7
7. S1

Season 4 was when the show was at it's peak. Season 6 and 3 were great too.

1. Season 7
2. Season 4
3. Season 5
4. Season 6

I didn't care too much for season 1 and 2 but they were good anyways.

I must admit, that season 5 and 7 are somewhat dissapointing, IMO.

None of them is a consistent season, with 7 especially having more bas epis than good. They're still better than the first, but at least the first season has the excuse of being, well, the first. They needlesly experimeneted in 5 and later, 7, as a friend of mine recently told me.

TNG should have been done by the sixth season. Had "All Good Things" done instead of "Descent", and be done with it.

Of course, we'd lose "Parallels" and some other good ones, but there'd always be a DS9 for that, no?

I'm re-watching the show for the first time in many, many years. I just started season two so I’ll have to reevaluate at a later time. But, from what I remember, season three just has too many outstanding greats to ignore.

“Who Watches the Watchers”
“Booby Trap”
“The Enemy”
“The Defector”
“The High Ground”
“Yesterday’s Enterprise”
“The Offspring”
“Sarek”
And, yes, even the painfully overrated “Best of Both Worlds.”

That’s some of Trek’s [any] very best. And, while the other seasons did have some quality episodes, they simply weren’t on par with the above.

I love S7. I'm not entirely sure I can come up with a convincing reason why, but it's my favourite.

I think seasons six and seven were where the sense of real friendship and camaraderie among the whole crew had really come to permeate the show. I always miss that when I go back to watch earlier seasons. Even in quite crummy episodes like Masks and Firstborn, the crew react to each other well. Also S7 has AGT, and I really less than three AGT.
