Best Season Five of any series

Another tight run for me between TNG and DS9. Again, DS9 slightly edges out TNG. God, S6 is going to be a big tough one...

Looks like DS9 wins Season 4 with 46 percent of the vote. Season 5 is where it pretty much goes Deep Space Nine for me from here on out. Apacolypse Rising,Trials and Tribbelations,Things Past,For the Uniform,In Purgatory's Shadow/By inferno light,Soldiers of the Empire,Children of Time,Blaze of Glory and Call to Arms. Loved how they brought the Klingons back in an allience with the Federation with the Cardassions joining the Dominion and starting the big war.And Trials and Tribbleations was a brilliant episode.

Season 1:Star Trek
Season 2:Star Trek
Season 3:The Next Generation
Season 4:Deep Space Nine

i can see these seasons being chosen though TOS S3 is in some ways better than TNG3, TNG peaked with S3 in certain aspects and that's why it takes the crown

I disagree here as well would many others. TNG got revved up in Season 3 and had argueably its best season. TOS had one of the worst seasons in all of Trek History and this was why folks on this board voted for TNG by a huge margin over TOS. I don't even think TOS made it to fourth place in that poll for Season 3.IT was just so awful.

DS9.

Season four was when I sat up and took notice. Season five and beyond was appointment television for me.

DS9. This was the point were DS9 really became the best Trek series, and one of my all time favorite shows EVER.

TNG was remarkanly consistent I thought with a lot of fun stories-Disaster, The Game, Hero Worship, Unification, Violations, Conundrum, Power Play, Cause and Effect, The Next Phase, Times Arrow--and some good character drama like Ethics, The Inner Light, The First Duty.

I think the best stuff to come out of DS9 in year five was the epic ideas and reshuffling--bringing back in the Dominion after too far being absent on the main stage and then the start of the war. Call to Arms was this series' BoBW. In Purgatory's Shadow/By Infernos Light, Trials and Tribble-ations were all standouts but there was plenty of weak stuff--Let He, Ferengi Love Songs, Par'Mach, Empok Nor. Soldiers of the Empire nicely used the Dominion infiltration into the Alpha Quadrant but the story itself was average. The Ship was average especially for the 100th episode. I didn't care for Worf/Dax this year, Rom/Leeta hurt a few episodes. Didn't care for the Kira b-plot in The Begotten, A Simple Investigation was forgettable. So it did more things on a grandscale and took a lot of risks but it was far from perfect.

VOY-5 was weaker than four and was all over the place.

DS9
TNG
VOY

TNG and VOY were both inconsistent in their fifth seasons, but TNG had more truly wonderful episodes.

Agreed. Fun stuff, but at times ridiculous. Lwaxana Troi episodes always annoyed me, and the time travel was getting to be a bit much. Ensign Ro could have been a much better character on the show than Wesley ever was but that never happened because the show usually choosed to play it safe.

I would say that TNG had far more weaker episodes that season than DS9 and was even less perfect. A Matter of Time,Hero Worship,The Outcast,Cost of Living,The Perfect Mate,Imaginary Friend are hardly what I consider to be great episodes. Riker falling in love with yet another species. Big deal. Every relationship on TNG felt forced and usually didn't last past a few episodes. Unification 1 was O.K, but hardly great. It was just one big setup for the grand appearance of Spock. And I'm one of those that considers "I Borg" as the first episode that started the neutered Borg that we were forced to witness in later years. The Borg were a threat because they were faceless enemies bent on destruction. Taking a young drone and turning him into someone who thinks like a federation type just kills the whole fear factor that the Borg had.

DS9. No contest.

Season 5 is when VOY in particular started going downhill in a rather craptacular manner. And TNG season 5 was fairly forgettable.

Voyager's fifth season was miles from perfect but it was nowhere near as craptacular as the overrated third season, where there was a spectacularly disproportionate loss of viewers (I briefly stopped watching by then), solid proof that the writers failed in developing a decent ensemble of characters long before Seven was introduced, the "meh" Kes running towards the end of her limited story potential (not that Jennifer Lien did a bad job), Jeri Taylor's mostly snore inducing writing (Braga's ideas were relentlessly goofy but at least they didn't put me to sleep), and Michael Piller's then recent loss being notably felt. I don't think VOY went downhill again so earnestly for me until halfway into the sixth season.

And TNG season 5 was fairly forgettable.

From what I could recall, The Next Generation was in it's prime around Seasons Five and Six. Again it's fifth season was vastly better than most of the content of TNG's disasterous first two seasons. I don't think The Next Generation got notably poor again until it's seventh season (but it's seventh season was not quite as horrific as Voyager's seventh season). I think it is "forgettable" because it is such a long time ago now and I haven't seen it properly in so many years... ;)

I have thought for several years that Voyager peaked in season five, but this is a peak in a series that had many problems and was interfered with by its network so badly that it couldn't succeed. It became consistently watchable in season five. That is not to say it was inspired. But a lot of people worked hard on it and believed in it, and I want to recognize their efforts.

I'm now reassessing the first three seasons. They were a mixture of crap but also solidity we never had again in the series. When a good script came along, it was intelligent and well-performed. There's more substance to a good season 1-3 story than there was in later seasons. But season five was more consistently watchable from start to finish.

A Yoyager peak doesn't begin to compare to a DS9 peak, though. DS9 wins easily. With Next Gen, there's an adult tone that Voyager seldom had, but also an uninspired blandness. We don't see any sign of the sense of wonder that great SF is supposed to evoke. I lose interest in NG from around one-third of the way into season four. The edge is gone. It became safer and more stale.

I was gonna say 24, Babylon 5 or heck maybe Quantum Leap but then I saw its in General Trek not General TV... I would vote for DS9, but since DS9 stole the s4 victory from ENT's only real deserved praise, I'll go the Minbari route and abstain...
