Best Season Five of any series

I was going to pick Enterprise but since there's no choice for it, I'll choose DS9.

There was no season 5 for Enterprise. It got canceled. Why would I put an option in a poll for a show that was already canceled?

I have thought for several years that Voyager peaked in season five,

Yes it did.

but this is a peak in a series that had many problems and was interfered with by its network so badly that it couldn't succeed. It became consistently watchable in season five. That is not to say it was inspired. But a lot of people worked hard on it and believed in it, and I want to recognize their efforts.

Fair point.

I'm now reassessing the first three seasons. They were a mixture of crap but also solidity we never had again in the series. When a good script came along, it was intelligent and well-performed. There's more substance to a good season 1-3 story than there was in later seasons.

The was a "solidarity" in the first three seasons, but I'm afraid it was a "solidarity" of mediocrity, epecially in Season Three, and while Season One was as good as Five, with several decent episodes in Seasons Two and Three, I really don't think there was any notable substance in comparison to the more flashy later seasons and too many early episodes were MT3K terrible.

Sorry, it was only a joke ;)

Season 5 of DS9 is pretty strong. The only downside is they were still mopping up the "Klingon" storyline but thankfully didn't spend too much time on it.

Deep Space Nine by far. Its fifth season is my favorite season of any Star Trek show.

A Yoyager peak doesn't begin to compare to a DS9 peak, though. DS9 wins easily. With Next Gen, there's an adult tone that Voyager seldom had, but also an uninspired blandness. We don't see any sign of the sense of wonder that great SF is supposed to evoke. I lose interest in NG from around one-third of the way into season four. The edge is gone. It became safer and more stale.

Interesting, because I am one of those who prefers the early seasons of VOY to the later seasons. I quite liked the first 3 seasons of VOY in particular, my only real gripe being the dropping of the original premise fairly early. Other than that, I thought it was quite good. They were developing the characters, and alot of the stories were interesting. It was much more an ensemble show than it become later on...and I felt that screentime was more equal.

Season 4 was okay...but after that the show quickly became The EMH & His Borg Babe Hour. Many of the other characters got no development at all after this (Tuvok, Kim, Neelix)...some were wussified to the point of being practically destroyed (Tom Paris, B'Elanna Torres), and still others seemed to be intentionally destroyed by the writers (Chakotay).

Nah....give me the first 3 seasons of VOY any day! :p

Going with your strongest characters and giving them more screen time isn't necessarily a bad idea. Tukok was difficult to deal with and write for. He experienced things and spoke and behaved in a far more unemotional way than Nimoy did, when with Spock you could tell he was flesh-and-blood and not a robot. It's hard to do much of anything with an absolutely flat demeanor, of if it's possible, they weren't the people to accomplish it.

Harry is a sensitive, nice, new guy. That's all, really. He's sort of generic. His greater screen time early on didn't do much to develop him into someone interesting.

R Beltram complained about bad scripts and lost screen time as a result, didn't he? I'd have liked to see more of him. He had potential.

Paris has too much generic "niceness" too, but he really had that all along. They faked us out occasionally, making us wonder if he was going "bad" and reverting to that supposedly terrible guy he was before Voyager, but these weren't real or serious, as it turned out. He gets funnier later, and that'sa an improvement, I think.

Behlanna (sp?)-- She still had plenty of screen time, didn't she? And they dealt with some darker matters with her, later on. I think they did develop her.

I think it became the Janeway-Doctor-Seven-B'Lanna show, and at least in seasons 4 and 5, I think that was a great little ensemble. I would say that, though, since they are my favorite characters.

On my reassessing seasons 1-3... I taped in syndication the ones I could stand to watch. (If I had another chance I'd tape it all, because I get sick of just these.) So, almost all of season one, very few of season two, and in season 3 they yanked Voyager off the air. I'm looking at the best episodes, so obviously my picture of it is skewed. but then, it also means I appreciate the better ones more.

DS9 season five wins this one easily, for me.

So many great episodes. 'Trials and Tribbleations', 'In Purgatory's Shadow/By Inferno's Light', 'Call to Arms', et al. But that said, there was certainly some rubbish in DS9 S5. 'Looking for Par'Mach...' 'Let He Is Without Sin', urggh! Worst Trek episodes EVER, IMHO.

VOY and TNG had good fifth seasons too, I think.

From here onwards, I think DS9 wins for me.

S1: TOS
S2: TOS
S3: TNG
S4: VOY
S5: DS9
S6: DS9
S7: DS9
