My top five favorite sci-fi films are:

Blade Runner
Forbidden Planet
2001: A Space Odyssey
Star Wars
Plan 9 from Outer Space

Zardoz. Nobody knows what's science fiction anymore. It's not only the future of things we know but the future of things we don't know.

Alien
Blade Runner
Planet of the Apes
2001
Soylent Green

The best sci-fi action movie is Robocop, followed by the first two Mad Max films.

Ever?

The Day The Earth Stood Still (the original)

Followed by:

Forbidden Planet
War of the Worlds (original)
The Thing From Another World
Alien

Stars Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace
Star Trek V: The Final Frontier
Superman IV: The Quest for Peace
Highlander II: The Quickening
Beastmaster 2: Through the Portal of Time

Actually in the future we will all be able to sing and dance like Gene Kelley. Question is will we use it for good or evil.

Personal favourite: "Twelve Monkeys"
Best overall: "The Day the Earth Stood Still" (1951)

I laugh so hard all throughout "Twelve Monkeys" because I love how crazy Bruce Willis looks, sounds, and acts so that no one believes him, even though everything he's saying is true. Somehow, I can take that movie seriously and find it really intriguing and moving while at the same time laughing my ass off. There's a really twisted genius to it. No other movie has a funnier depiction of someone beating someone else to death.

Star Wars The Empire Strikes Back
Blade Runner
The Fifth Element
Forbidden Planet
War of the Worlds (original)
Time Machine (both)
The Matrix
Planet of the Apes
2001
2010

I know there are more but I don't have my list here.

When I was in university, I took a class called Apocalyptic Science Fiction and the teacher asked every student what their favourite science fiction movie was. I said, "Star Trek: First Contact" and everyone laughed at me. Not because of which Star Trek movie I mentioned, but the fact that I picked a Star Trek movie. I know because they were already starting to laugh after I'd only say Star Trek. :( Has anyone else ever been looked down upon for considering a Star Trek movie near the pinnacle of sci-fi? I was ashamed at the time, but I don't care now. I still think my favourite Star Trek movies (II, IV, and VIII) are better than 90% of sci-fi. "Star Trek: First Contact" is my next favourite after the others I mentioned.

I don't think anyone has mentioned "Dark City" or "Equilibrium" yet. I thought both were amazing. I know a lot of people out there think "Equilibirum" is dumb, but I seriously think it's the best of all the dystopia/negative vision of the future movies. I like it more than "Blade Runner" AND "Nineteen Eighty-Four", although I thought the latter was a decent adaptation. "Minority Report" was cool too.

I was an undergraduate film student, and was certainly mocked a few times for being such a big fan of Star Trek, yeah. But then the new movie came out, and it was less of a big deal.

I don't really care either way.
