Best Game Console?

Hi All,

I haven't owned a game console since The Legend of Zelda was sold on gold cartridge cases for the original Nintendo Entertainment System...

But, now that I'm (hopefully) getting a house, I'm thinking it might be nice to spend some time away from my home office (my computer is my video game system, my TV, my phone, and more)...

And so, now I'm considering a new game console for my new living room...

I like simple games... Mario and Zelda were old favorites... I enjoyed Crash Bandicoot when I played it once at a friend's house years ago... I always hated sports games, or games with complex control combinations...

So my questions are these: What system should I get? And why? And what games that might be good for me are popular today?

Thanks in advance for your ideas / advice!

ZS

Probably would get a better response in the Gaming section.

And what's the bet that this turns into another "360 Fanboy vs PS3 Fanboy" argument? ;)

You're right. I didn't realize there was a dedicated Gaming forum (I knew about the Trek Gaming, though)... I spend too much time in TNZ...

Mods... Can you beam this where I should have put it originally please? TIA.

Sounds like Wii is your best bet since you can rely on old favorites like Mario, Metroid and Zelda. And the controls are really simple. However, 90% of all Wii games are total garbage, so you might want to read up on games before buying them. The name brands and popular franchises are usually safe bets though.

Some of the highest-rated Wii games currently out include Super Mario Galaxy, The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess, Super Paper Mario, Punch-Out, Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Okami, No More Heroes and Resident Evil 4, and the Metroid Prime Trilogy comes out this week. Mario Kart can be fun sometimes too. Even though you don't like sports games, you may want to give Tiger Woods 10 a shot on the Wii.

Get the XBOX 360. The PS3 sucks except for Metal Gear Solid 4, and the Wii is total trash except for the Zelda game. The 360 on the other hand, has Halo 3, Mass Effect, GTA4, Left 4 Dead, HAWX, Burnout Paradise, Fallout 3, and a zillion other good games. FYI, most of the good 360 games are also on PC and PS3, but the PS3 delivers crap versions of those. And if you already own a PC, the xbox exclusives are pretty good.

I agree with Aragorn on this, a Wii is the best bet for you. Just be really selective about games. The Wii is the new home of god awful shovelware which tends to disguise the fact that it also has some real gems available for it.

Saying the PS3 sucks (with the exception of MGS4) is a load of crap. There are quite a few seriously awesome exclusives for the PS3 (Valkyria Chronicles, Uncharted, Ratchet & Clank: Tools of Destruction, LittleBigPlanet, Wipeout HD, Motorstorm: Pacific Rift...). You also get a Blu-ray player. And I love how you mention games like HAWX, Burnout Paradise, and Fallout 3 which are all also available for the PS3.

Only 11 hours between Servo's comment and this post? Someone's slipping. Though I'm surprised you didn't try to back up your statements by saying the PS3 sucks because it's lame, and the Wii is trash because it sucks.

You also forgot to mention how your 360 blows you.

Maybe you should list all one zillion games.

Isn't it fun when people ignore the entire OP when giving a response?

Yeah, I would go for the Wii. At the least, you can check out the games from the past gens that you missed (since there is a big gap between NES and the Wii). Also, it will play Gamecube Games natively, so you will have a lot of choices. I would stay away from the 360/PS3 since you said you do a lot of PC gaming and those consoles are more of a replacement for PC gaming while the Wii is it's own thing.

So predictable.

In terms of hardware, probably the PS3, since its more reliable and has a blu-ray player built in. However its games library is less than stellar at the moment, and it is still the most expensive console on the market.

The 360 has a far more extensive games library with a lot more quality exclusives. Mass Effect alone puts it ahead of the competition. However, you are likely to end up buying at least two eventually, given the shoddy work Microsoft put into it.

The Wii is the barely a games console. If you want to play utterly shallow minigame collections or measure your weight then the Wii is for you. All with the added bonus of waving your arms about like a complete moron.

^ Yes, but if Shikarnov wants to play Zelda and Mario then the PS3 and 360 aren't going to be much use. The Wii is a safe bet as you can pick up Zelda: Twilight Princess, Paper Mario, Super Mario Galaxy etc. and also run old GameCube games on it like Wind Waker (my version also came with a GC version of Ocarina of Time, and you can't beat that, right? :bolian:)

Every console has its merit - different strokes and all that. (Except the 3DO, which was pants.)

The Wii has superior aerodynamics, but PS3 makes for the superior bludgeon. X360 can pull double duty as a space heater.

Thanks everybody for your replies... It looks like the Wii is gonna win the day. Even if I don't buy it tomorrow, at least I know where to begin. I appreciate the help.

I have to admit that I'm surprised to hear that they're still making Mario, Zelda, and Metroid games. I'd hoped to find something similar in type (I thought Crash Bandicoot, the one time I played it, was a good evolution of the Mario-type game), but newer versions of the same old stuff will probably be just fine after a 20 year hiatus. :)
