Some people think Nero is a direct ripoff of Shinzon...sort of an apology to the fans for the subpar, crappy villain in the previous movie. I dunno. Nero was considerably better.
I voted for Chang, partly because of the Shakespeare fetish. Trek has Shakespeare in its DNA already, and what could be more Shakespearean than political intrigue and assassination? (Famously, Shakespeare even coined the word "assassinate" as a verb.) I thought that it added an interesting dimension to the character. Arguably it even adds a dimension of self-awareness; he knows he's a Shakespearen character.Second place to Chang, though. Christopher Plummer exudes an icy menace in the entire dinner exchange, and his interrogation of Kirk is great even if his quotation spree gets a trifle more campy then Khan's near the end (McCoy's dead on the money here).
