When you're a kid and you're being taught the points of a compass having a funny rhyme to remember the order the come in helps. That's how a mnemonic works, it sticks in your brain - we don't need them now to remember things we've learned at school but we can't help remembering them.

The planets list I was taught was My Very Easy Mind Jumps Swiftly Upon New Plans

About the compass directions: I never learned a mnemonic, but the ones I'm seeing here wouldn't have helped me anyway, because I learned them as North, South, East, West.

There's some good ones here hadn't encountered before, so already found this useful.

I think the 'Never Eat Shredded Wheat' was more for learning the points of compass in clockwise rotation rather than names. Which is especially useful for people who get left and right mixed up, which I know is a common experience for many. But could be wrong...
