Best episodes non-Dominion War related?

ReadyAndWilling

Fleet Captain
hey guys, i really like the exploration/time travel side of Star Trek and was wondering what episodes of DS9 i could check out. i really enjoyed the episode where a Founder called Lars meets up with Odo on DS9 as it was something different.

are there any other episodes like this i could check out? i'm going to watch 'little green men' later.

thanks

"Duet" is my clear choice as best non-Dominion war episode, but it doesn't fit your preference of exploration/time travel. In that regard, I'd recommend:

Shadowplay
Visionary
Explorers
The Visitor
Little Green Men
Hard Time
Trials and Tribble-ations
Things Past
Children of Time
Far Beyond the Stars

You may also like the two part episode Past Tense.

"The Quickening" was a great episode and it was refreshing in that it didn't involve any Bajor/Cardassia stuff. Just a good old medical episode where the Doctor is faced with the challenge of curing a disease.

this is an odd category, since the great majority of DS9 episodes are not Dominion War related. But I'll play

Duet
the Visitor
Trials and Tribbleations
Whispers
Necessary Evil
Rules of Acquisition
The Nagus

Which is very let down by the ending imo.

I think the only time travel not mentioned is "Wrongs Darker Than Death or Night". Can't remember if that was a particularly popular episode or not.

I thought the ending of "The Quickening" was very well done; none of the other series could have pulled it off.

Here are some of my favorites from Seasons 1 and 2, before the Dominion were even introduced:

Season One:
Duet
In The Hands of the Prophets

Season Two:
Necessary Evil
Whispers
Paradise
Shadowplay
The Maquis Part 1 and 2
Crossover
The Collaborator
Tribunal

It's a good episode--just watched it recently. The "Orb of Time" gimmick was silly, but I guess there was no way to do it without time travel of some sort.

Deep Space Nine isn't really a show where you should just cherry pick episodes that sound good to be honest, the serialization aspect generally means that something will be going on in an episode that relates to previous events so you won't be able to get the most out of it. Sometimes not, but often its the case.

Eh, maybe once the Dominion War starts, but I've got a few favorite episodes on an HDD so I can stream them to my Xbox. I have no problem following episodes because DS9 didn't do the "string out plot points that could be dealt with in a single episode across multiple episodes" thing that a lot of people believe is serialization and went for references to past episodes instead.

As long as one cherry-picks the entire episode arc, they'll be fine I think.

Yes, the Maquis episodes are very good. Actually, I was extremely thrilled the first time I saw the opening 3 episodes of Season 2. The Homecoming, The Circle and The Siege. Not Maquis episodes but I do think that was DS9's first arc.
