I think the worst job would have to be a medical lab tech and dealing with alien diseases that make Ebola look like the common cold.
+1I think it would depend on your service branch and personality. Some may not want to venture far from Earth or planetside service in general. Others may be drawn to deep space and exploration. A scientist may love being stuck on some distant world doing tedious anaylysis in a crappy environment. Your mileage may vary.
Amen to that! The two best assignments in the military are usually the one you just left and the one you want next.

Best assignment during Dominion War: Ships with Plot Shields (Defiant and Enterprise)
Worst assignment during Dominion War: Anything else.
I think the crap end of the galaxy would have to be an assignment like the communications relay in Aquiel. It's only manned by a couple of people, your shipmate is probably annoying and whiny and if anything interesting happens, it's probably bad.

You kinda feel bad for those people... yeah you're going up against a Jem'Hadar fleet with top of the line vessels... oh you'll be in a hundred year old Miranda class. Good luck!

There have been plenty of other civilians with their own ships throughout Trek. If anything, Trek makes it clear that interstellar space is teeming with civilian ships.
