Best Advice You've Ever Gotten?

Was just thinking about this randomly today. My husband was being annoying about a problem with wasps outside and even though I hate insects, I was tempted to get out there and deal with the issue myself. Then I remembered something my mother-in-law said to me about marriage, back while I was engaged.

"Never start doing something that you don't want to keep doing for the rest of your life."

I haven't even been married that long and I already can see the truth in this.

What's some of the best advice you've ever gotten? It can be wise, witty, funny, whatever.

I live by John Locke's "Don't tell me what I can't do" line and it's gotten me further than I can explain. Does that count?

When I'm facing some kind of dilemma or any difficult situation, my friends and family offer some of the best advice. The advice I've gotten has always been pretty straightforward, nothing profound or particularly special about it, and it's not as if I couldn't have figured it out myself. Coming from them, it just has more value and meaning, and it's really more a show of encouragement and support.

As of late, I guess the best advice I've received is to do more traveling in my life. Even a little trip, with someone or by myself, would definitely boost my morale, as I've been feeling like I'm stuck in a rut lately.

My grandfather:

Remember that family is always there for you. Be a good man, a man of character, always work hard and have common sense.

"If you ever travel back in time, don't step on anything, because even the tiniest change can alter the future in ways you can't imagine."

I wrote in the Happy Childhood Memories thread a few days back about my great grandmother, a Gogo boot clad mystic who held seminars, trusted the Ouija, and treated little children like people (a rare quality). She gave me some of the best advice I've ever heard, and I still follow it today: Whenever you are depressed, overwhelmed, or upset, take a walk and walk and walk, until you find something to smile at.

"If you ever travel back in time, don't touch anything! Even the slightest change can have consequences the likes of which you can't even imagine!"

;)

There are four kinds of people: Those who like you for the wrong reasons, those who like you for the right reasons, those who dislike you for the wrong reasons and those who dislike you for the right reasons. It's the last group you should take most to heart and learn from.

"Wait, you knew what you wanted to do in your life since you were eight years old, BUT you chose not to do it? You're an idiot!"-Lloyd Kaufman, convincing me to go into film.
