Best Advice You've Ever Gotten?

"No one comes to the Father, but through Me."

I have to cite Hitchens on this one. "This is the language of fascism."

It's so petty to say that I have a meek and mild savior for you, and if you don't like it, then you can burn forever and be tortured forever."

"I decline to be spoken to in that tone of voice. I will not be told I have a supernatural offer for you, you can be redeemed if you believed just in and if you don't like it you can be tortured forever. I won't be talked to like that. That is the language of fascism and dictatorship. And it's directly immoral and it's a very great relief to know that it's completely mythical, that there's not a rag of truth to the story."

Life may not be fair, but people can either choose to be or not to be. Never let someone who just gave you the shaft get away with "life isn't fair" as an excuse.

What a great idea for a thread! :)

I myself got most of the "advice" that matters to me indirectly, not from anyone speaking it to me face-to-face or indeed addressing me at all, but through books, television, etc. Advice can be transmitted from person to persion in many ways, of course. As someone who had to do without advisory figures in his life (and ached for them), I think the piece I took to heart the most was this quote from "Babylon Five", my favourite TV show, about humans as a species:

"Their only weakness is that they do not recognize their own greatness. They forget they have come to this place through two million years of evolution, struggle, and blood. They are better than they think and nobler than they know. They carry within them the capacity to walk among the stars as giants."

I have never stopped believing this, and it informs much of what I do, which seems to fit the definition well enough. I'm not sure this will be viewed as true "advice" by people seeing as it wasn't addressed to me from another, but I never got meaningful advice in that way; I had to find my own path with help I found myself.

In the Army - "If you get lost, always head toward the smoke and you will find the battle there."

In Civilian life - "As long as you do your best, the rest will take care of itself."

He gets awfully worked up about something he doesn't believe in, doesn't he?

I think his problem isn't with religion itself, but rather with the fact that MODERN policy is dictated by the semi-literate scrawlings of a pack of centuries dead goat herders.

Given that such nonsense directly affects every facet of modern life and politics, I think Dawkins has every right to be upset by it. Your supersitions directly influence his life.

Wow! Such venom! It's amazing how hated God and Christ are in some circles. Don't worry Mr. Hitchens, it'll only feel like an eternity. :techman:

Venom? I have no problem with people believing what they want to believe. The difficulties start when people start trying to legally mandate the dictates of their particular moldy book upon others.

Like it or not, in the eyes of most your notions of "WHAT JESUS WOULD DO" are no more relevant to modern political discourse than the cave wall scratchings of homo erectus. There is no reason to give your beliefs anymore weight than those of THOUSANDS of cults and religions that have cropped up over the course of man's existence.

Science presents us with the only rational explanation of our origins. Sadly, it's explanation doesn't allow us to flatter ourselves as the brood of the almighty, and I suspect this is the reason so many reject it. People like to think that they're special, but generally as a rule they aren't.

But still, have fun wasting your one and only life :techman: Just don't try to cram it down my throat.

"A slap goes away but a word stays."

To watch what you say because words often cause greater pain.

"Never say 'No' to your husband (when it comes to making love)."

Of course, that's assuming you enjoy it.

WHAT?!?!?! Are we in Afganistan right now??? LOL never say no to your husband...of all the insane things I've ever read...and yeah I like sex fine. Who gave you this unrealistic gem of advise? Your great great great great great grandmother??? sorry but if i'm really pissed...like really... i'm not fucking you. women and emotions are very connected...both in and out of the bedroom. men don't realize that if they did the little bullshit that women want them to do (and in a timely fashion) they'd get repaid for it in.... oh so many other ways. But I digress....

If you'd just go make me a sammich maybe I would do what you wanted.

Oh and "timely fashion" according to who's timetable? :shifty:
