Best actor on the show?

I think Jason Isaacs is the best actor, but I also think that Doug Jones has been giving the best performances.Go figure.
I've resigned myself to the idea that the writers will find some way to make Lorca as EEEEEEEVIL (TM) as some folks apparently think he is...so they can somehow, unrealistically, shoehorn Burnham into the centre seat. Does not change the fact I'll be very annoyed to see it; perhaps as annoyed as I was to watch Kirk go from Cadet to Captain in three scenes in Star Trek (2009) and that's saying something.
Keep in mind that the show's stated goal is to present a Trek series that does not focus on the captain character. Unless that changes, I don't think Burnham will ever be captain even if something happens to Lorca. BTW, the show has already knocked off a captain that the audience had become familiar with. I don't see them repeating this, especially not in the very first season.

While Isaacs is a good actor, I think a significant part of why people are praising his performance so much is that he gets to play an interesting type of character that is new to Star Trek. He's badass and broken.
Isaacs plays the role well but I don't think he's any better than Anthony Rapp or Jayne Brook (who I thought was fantastic as Admiral Cornwell).

Having said that, even halfway through season 1 I'm still as unconvinced that Martin-Green can carry a show as a lead as I was when her casting was announced.
I find her acting very unnatural, unsubtle and somewhat stilted.

I'm not convinced of Isaac's role in DSC. They make him mumble in that cartoonish low voice, I believe he'd be far more effective with his natural voice. I know he's a great actor, but I don't think DSC really makes use of his potential.

As for Martin-Green, I don't think that was a good choice for the lead role. Her acting is ok but not on par with some of the other actors. Writing-wise, I think Michael Burnham is an idiot and I don't know in what way I'm supposed to like her.

So, perhaps more to the point of the thread, who DO you like?

As I said, I'm not convinced by how he's used, but Isaac's pretty good anyway. One of the better actors in Trek history for sure.

I really think her acting on Discovery is a choice. I have seen her in other things and she's bubbly and animated........I am hoping she will start to loosen up in season 2.......but they may always make her play stoic.

If that's the case than like Ryan and Blalock before her, free her from the clutches of the writers.

Then again, I'm also resigned to Tyler Is Voq, too, which bothers me on so many levels, I cannot begin to enumerate, so...
I too fear that they will do that to Lorca but I’m hopeful that they see how important Isaacs is to the show and will change course if that’s the case.

Isaacs is enough in demand as a movie actor, I wouldn't be surprised if he isn't interested in remaining a regular for multiple seasons. The writers might not have any choice in terms of how long Lorca will be around.

Isaacs is phenomenal, but Martin-Green and Latif are really growing into the material they are getting recently. I have no doubt that next week we'll get to see more of what Rapp can do, as well.

Isaacs is still good. Credit where credit's due. Martin-Greene was better than she has been in this past episode. She beat up the guy in the lift and 'played' Captain really well. Tyler (Latif) is not so good. Good looks can only get you so far. His scene with L'Rell was awful.

Jason Isaacs - Great

Doug Jones - Really good

Anthony Rapp - very good

Wilson Cruz - very good

Mary Wiseman - good

Martin-green and Shazad Latif - kill them off and replace with better people please

And lets face it he's no prime Frakes in that department

After this episode I want to give some love to Mary Wiseman. Her transformation from shy and awkward to almost queenlike and powerful was probably my favorite part of Despite Yourself. I loved her "So fucking cool" outburst, but this just took that to another level for me. She may not be the "star" of the show, but she's been one of the show's best qualities.
