News Benioff and Weiss Leave Star Wars

Why condemn? If she fired them she should be given a raise. They're really only good at adapting the work of others, on their own they aren't so hot.
Also this. Reading about the BTS chaos on GoT makes me think that SW is dodging a bullet right now.

Funny to me how when the hiring was announced many SW fans were angry because of how disappointing GoT's ending was. But, now, apparently, their firing is the worst thing...

you make it sound like adapting isn't it's own amazing art form and one worthy of its own award at the oscars.. that anyone who adaopts a pre-existing work will by default create a masterpiece. i don't even watch the show..but these guys adapting the books and thus created the biggest show in the history of television

Clearly didn't keep up on how it ended or how angry these two men made their own fan base.

Complaining is all some people have. Doesn't matter that they sometimes contradict themselves, they just want to complain to complain.

Art is a bit strong for Game of Thrones. It's fantasy tropes but gritty and with sex scenes. It's good, but it isn't the greatest achievement in television history. People said the same about Lost and now it's largely forgotten. Judge it in 10 years.

I'd rather ignore it. Got through one episode and it was just awful. Great television? Not likely.

I already said I don't watch the show. I also said the "art" was about adapting..
Then perhaps it is a good thing that these two are not going forward with SW. Because they have recently admitted they had no idea what they were doing when first starting out with GoT, and the last season left a very bad taste in their audience's mouth.

Doesn't matter. Complain away.

I'm not saying whether or not it was a good thing story-wise for SW that this happened.

What I am saying is that there was a breakdown in leadership, in contracts, in all the other matters behind the scenes that point to poor vetting. I mean Feige had only one major announcement eat him in the ass, and that was for edgar Wright and it only happened after a few years..
KK has had five departures or problems and as of now only 4 films have been released

It's entertaining and there's at least one character who you can root for. For me, it's Sansa and she took a while to grow on me. It's like any other HBO show though.

Good Omens was art, Game of Thrones isn't. Plus how would you even know if you don't watch it? Art is subjective.

This is how Hollywood works, pretty much from the beginning.

I haven't seen Game of Thrones in awhile but how could one bad season mean they always sucked. Some shows just have bad endings. Jason

Game of Thrones changed TV forever. Saying otherwise is just being clueless.

The ending was good... unless your favorite team didn't win. That's why people can't stop complaining. Has nothing to do with lack of quality.

I admittedly had given up on GoT at the end of season five. It was just getting to be too much of a downer of a show for me. Plus my free HBO was about up. But a few months ago, my wife decided to pick up HBO Now for some show. I decided to catch up on a few shows - Veep and Silicon Valley, to be specific. Then finishing those up, I figured, "What the hell? Let’s finish GoT." So I watched seasons 6 and 7 over about six weeks. I was home sick last Monday and finished the final season.

Honestly? I didn’t hate the ending. I think storywise, it was a little short-changed in amount of time to give to the characters. It didn't wow me but it didn’t make me as angry as some. It just left me kinda saying, “Huh? Okay. What’s next?” But then again, I might not have been as invested or engaged as others were. But I can't deny the fact that it was amazingly done. Every shot, you could see the money on the screen -- in the number of extras, the visual effects, the set work. It was all damned impressive. That is more of a testament to both HBO for giving the budget to see the ending through and the behind the scenes crew from executive producer down to craft services for being able to put it together well.

Regardless, as others have said: This Star Wars thing comes down to money. I work in law and will be completing my Masters of Heathcare Administration in December. I have seen many contracts in my day in both of those areas. Some of them are binding. Some of them have clauses that let one or both parties step away. Many of those include financial penalties if they do so. Ultimately, a contract is a contract is a contract. Whether that's a contract for an employment contract for a physician or a sale of asbestos products to a Naval base or a development deal for a writer-producer duo. The specifics may differ but the mechanics of these are virtually the same.

D&D signed their Star Wars deal in February 2018 for an undisclosed sum. In August 2019, a deal was announced for them and Netflix at a rumored $200 million. It was enough for D&D to likely deal with any financial repercussions for leaving the LFL deal and still live more than comfortably. There was no way that Kathleen Kennedy was going to know that this was going to happen with D&D and Netflix. Because of these lucrative deals too, streaming services are producing some better content these days than film is able to. They can tell longer form original stories that the movie arm of studios aren't able to.

Honestly, while I am excited for The Rise of Skywalker, I am far more intrigued with what The Mandalorian has to offer because this is basically going to be an eight hour movie. We gave up cable and only do streaming offerings with a few network shows off of Hulu. We don't watch nearly as many movies anymore partially because of time, partially because we just don't find them as engaging. On film you get spectacle. In prestige TV/streaming, you get character. For me, character is far more interesting.

I don't know if B&B will be producing anything amazing for Netflix. I'm hoping for something extremely different than what we've seen from them, whether that is an adaptation or original content, it is my hope that they have learned their lesson from GoT and make something worthwhile. But I can say I don't blame them for making the choice they did. Not because "blah blah blah Star Wars is a mess blah blah blah KK sucks and should be fired" but because this gives them more freedom to create something new in a format that might give them space to grow. Film can be a lot more constrictive due to time issues. Film still does some amazing things but its now more about the spectacle.

All in my opinion. Of course, your mileage may vary.
