Tom and Kes' daughter didn't exactly have many options as far as picking a mate went, you know, unless she waved goodbye to mom and pops and offloaded to some alien ship or planet.
Uhh, what about the other 70 or 80 men on the ship, the ones who weren't on the command crew? But then, that was one of the problems with later VGR... the stories became so tightly focused on the regulars and just a couple of recurring characters, and nobody else on the ship ever got paid attention to except in passing. But then, that's a perennial problem with most Trek shows. The TOS and TNG
Enterprises supposedly had lots of scientists aboard, but only the command crew and a few security guards ever seemed to beam down anywhere. DS9's command crew doubled as
Defiant crew instead of there being a separate crew for each, and a Ferengi cadet who never even finished the Academy ended up as chief engineer over countless other qualified candidates who weren't semi-regulars. And so on.
