BBC America Making Who Announcement Today

Allyn Gibson

Per Twitter, BBC America says that "BIG #DoctorWho achievement to be announced today...stay tuned."

Speculation?

The word "achievement" limits the possibilities, I think. A full coproduction deal wouldn't be an "achievement." Nor would setting the fall broadcast date.

Are there any award nominations being announced today? That would be an achievement.

<Paces back and forth, taps fingers, cracks knuckles....>

Definitely a strange announcement about an announcement, considering this BBCA, and not BBC

For me, that's big news. I was made fun of because I was a huge Dr. Who fan in middle and high school. To all my hata's...Look at me now, Bitches!

^^ On that note, I was like you.. I was a BIG Who fan in highschool and suffered some jokes made at my expense because of it.. The fact that I played football too, helped temper that, but add my Who fandom to my Rush fanaticism, and it was a no-win situation..

Flashforward to 2012 and I'm AMAZED at how many of my old highschool classmates (as well as, or perhaps because of, their kids) are digging on NuWho... I don't really bring it up, but smile quietly to myself.. "Told ya, suckas!!!"...

An added bonus to this is that a LOT of them have suddenly decided that they like Rush as well.. So HA!!!

I hope that's the band, and not the comedia...er...Political Commentator ;)

ah...a magazine cover.

I let my imagination run away and hoped BBC America had gotten the rights to air "classic" episodes. (Eh, maybe it's better it didn't. The arbitrary and ill placed commercial breaks would have driven me nuts.)

Sincerely,

Bill

As cool as this is, I don't think it's that a big deal, but Doctor Who has been a huge part of my life since I was a young kid thanks to PBS.

On a side note, I have to nitpick the cover a little. It lists examples of the 25 greatest cult TV series...and yet no mention of Star Trek. I'll definitely grant some of those shows, but I haven't even heard of Archer. :wtf:

I think "I haven't heard of it, so it can't be on a list of cult shows" may be a slightly flawed piece of reasoning... ;) Frankly, by the usual definition of cult TV, it's a mainstream ratings (Lost) or critical (The Wire) success that doesn't belong on the list. But these pop culture countdowns are designed to draw attention by what they do and don't include.

It is if you're a giant geek and follows a large number of cult shows. I've heard of many cult shows that I don't follow (including several on that list). My point is how do they exclude Star Trek arguably one of the largest, if not largest, cult phenomenons ever, but include something that's arguably tiny in comparison?

They say they list twenty-five cult shows, and there's only ten listed on that cover. So for all we know, Star Trek is one of the fifteen they didn't list.

Star Trek spawned 4 series that ran for 7 seasons and 11 movies all released on the big screen, I don't know how cult that can be considered. I guess it depends on your definition but it's about as mainstream as a cult property can get.

Looks like this might be a fun issue to pick up though with Who and all the other shows.

Did we lose our Cult Status when the 2009 Movie went "Mainstream"? TNG pretty much went Mainstream too, I believe, it was as strong then, on syndication as CSI:Whatever or Law and Order:Whatever are today, in terms of percentage of available viewers, no?

Granted it might not be cult anymore but it certainly was cult for a long time (certainly from the 60's to the 80's, at least).

Well it's actually 3 series which ran for 7 seasons and one which ran for 4.

^ Well, except for the fact that an entire series got past them! :p Star Trek also spawned TAS!

Every time something I love seems to be making it into the mainstream, I just have to open my mouth and rattle off some obscure bits of trivia that only my brain can handle. (My head has extra memory space because I never remember the names of people I meet IRL.) Once I've finished, I feel "special" again.:p Although, sometimes I'm forced to dig deeper into geekdom to find relatively virgin territory, like Earth: Final Conflict or Power Rangers or finding the geekier angles of Law & Order.
