Spoilers Batwoman - Season 1

About timelines:
Kate is supposed to be in her late 20s as of the Pilot, and was either 12 or 13 (depending on if her family followed Reformist Judiasm) when she, her mom, and Beth were knocked off the road, so she could have very easily and conceivably been attending Point Rock Academy prior to the repeal of DADT.

Maybe, but if they were that young they probably would have gone with younger actresses for Kate and Sophie in the flashbacks.

Even if Kate and Sophie were in their late teens or early 20s during the Point Rock flashbacks, they could still have easily and conceivably been affected by DADT.

This was actually a really good premiere. We got some good action, the villain and supporting cast is interesting, and the main actor did pretty well (although I'd still have preferred a Batwoman actress who has even a slight resemblance to the comic version, I'd say almost becoming a paraplegic playing the role certainly proved that she's tough enough). The Batman suit, while it obviously looks the way it does so that it can be "converted" to the Batwoman suit, looks really cheap and probably would look bad if Batman showed up actually wearing it, but that's the only design thing in the show that kind of bugged me.

I am a bit worried about where the show goes after Alice, though. With the next Batman movie coming up in a few years, I doubt that Batwoman will have the same access to Batman villains that Gotham had. I foresee a lot of z-list villains like Magpie and Professor Pyg in this show's future. That's not necessarily a bad thing, but I could think of a few villains I'd like to see this Batwoman eventually face that she probably never will.

Still, the show has started off very well, and I'm interested in seeing more.

^ Magpie is comimg in Season 1.

I may have heard of that, it was in my mind a bit. To be clear, I'm fine with seeing lesser known villains, I'm just a bit worried that all we'll get is the z-list villains. I mean, I'm not expecting to see Joker, but I'd be interested in seeing the B-list characters like The Ventriloquist or Clayface show up.

It would've had to be more than 8 years ago. It didn't seem like it was quite that long.
I thought they did a great job in de-aging Ruby in the flashback scenes. She looked like a teenager. 8 years may not be that far fetched since Ruby is really 33 years old, so, 8+ years back could make her 24 or younger if she is as old as she is in real life. Even if you take five years off, that could make her about 20. Looks plausible. :techman:

It just seemed to me that their breakup was in the more recent past, given how strongly Kate still felt about Sophie.

Like I said, Kate is in her late 20s in the Pilot's present-day scenes.

One thing I forgot to mention is how much I like the music. I kind of mentioned it last year during EW, but it's my favorite of the hero themes - even if it's the most derivative. It's punchy and aggressive.

Probably not, but I also don't think it will be a blanket "NO" like it would have been in the olden days.
I'm sure we'll see some B-listers pop up from time to time.

If we can have a movie Black Canary and talk of an Arrowverse spin-off with 50 Canaries at the same time it's clear the embargos aren't what they used to be. ;)

On a related note, it'd be neat if we were to get a more comic accurate Cassandra Cain somewhere down the line on this show, I think she'd be a great fit for when they go about expanding the number of costumed people on the show, and Lady Shiva could be a nice season long villain.

I do like the Batwoman theme, and I'm glad they kept it after its debut in Elseworlds. (I was concerned it might be a "temp" theme and they'd replace it with something else.)

What do you think it's derivative of, though? I find it rather distinctive. If it reminds me of anything, it's a couple of Shirley Walker's Batman: The Animated Series scores, such as "On Leather Wings."

Rachel Skarsten? Black fricking Canary (II)?

Birds of Prey crossover?

They made this pilot aware that the Crisis was coming, and they didn't think to... "Grumble".

Alice's "boyfriend" is the Mad Hatter obviously.

Pilots usually suck.

I just think the percussive strings mixed with the hard drum hits feel very Zimmeresque - even more so than Ollie's theme. It's also a sound that has started to bleed over to pop music - especially with the use of digital drums.

This was a school honor code, not the unified military code of Justice for the US armed forces.

It's possible that the school was slow to update their honor code to reflect the change in America and Armed forces, or it's possible that this School was one of the last (not even close) bastians of homophobia in America.

Yep. In the comics, it was West Point, but here it's a fictional Academy with its own "Code of Conduct." Guess they figured that give them a little more wiggle room where DADT is concerned.
