Batman: The Brave and the Bold news, discussion and reviews

OT: In the comics, weren't the Freedom Fighters recently killed off and then re-launched? Are they legacy characters, or did they just "get better"?
The Freedom Fighters are the charcters DC bought from Quality. They became the FF in the 1970s and lived on Earth-X ( where the Nazi won WWII). After the Crisis they became part of the single Earth.( as part of the All-Star Squadron based in the 1940s). In modern times mostly they were retired heroes but soon others took up their codenames. The most successful being the Ray, who was the son of the original Ray. Black Condor and Phantom Lady's also had strips but with less success. Uncle Sam also popped un as a gueststar in a few books ( and had a mini) He also went through a name an image change for awhile. Eventually a new Freedom fighters was formed with the legacy characters and a couple of the orginals. This was the team that was killed off. The new team is Uncle Sam and the third or fourth versions of the characters.

Wow! That's a very thorough answer to my question! I actually knew all that stuff, except for the last sentence, but thanks anyway! ;):):techman:

Other than that the show is a bit too fast paced and relies a little too heavily on action and very little story. I also found the teaser structure the way it is disconnected from the main story a little weird. It just seems like a way to cram in as many DC characters as they can.

I think they fit in plenty of story, given the fact that it's intended to be an action show. As for the teasers, yes, fitting in lots of characters is part of the intent, but then, that's the whole point of the show. And there's precedent for standalone teasers in series like James Bond, early MacGyver, and others.

Cartoon Network has shifted their schedule and they'll be showing "The Menace of the Madniks!" (which features Booster Gold and Blue Beetle/Ted Kord) this Friday instead of "The Mask of Matches Malone!" (the Birds of Prey episode written by Gail Simone).

"The Last Patrol!" was pretty impressive. It's cool that they basically retold the finale of the original Doom Patrol comic, which I've read about but not read. Still, it would've had more impact if it hadn't come so soon after the end of the Starro 2-parter.

Good grief, those were some weird villains. The Animal-Vegetable-Mineral Man? Uh-huh.

Here's the updated schedule:

15th October - "The Menace of the Madniks!"
22nd October - "Emperor Joker!"
29th October - "The Criss Cross Conspiracy!"

"The Criss Cross Conspiracy!" features Batwoman, the Riddler, and Felix Faust.

Apparently I got confused when I missed an episode and downloaded it to see it because I've been seeing episodes before they've aired! The Birds of Prey one was interesting, had an extremely risque musical number I can't believe got its way into a kid's show. I also saw Madniks which was just alright, but it was a loose adaptation of the recent Booster Gold comic.

Wait, is the Birds of Prey episode going to air at all?
It's already aired in Australia. It'll probably air on Cartoon Network next month. Don't know why they'd scramble things and show the episodes out of production order, but it's something they've done in the past.

Australia is ahead of Cartoon Network and those episodes have found their way online.

Ahh, but since it's all innuendo, the kids don't notice the risque content. It's a classic practice, going back to the cinematic cartoons of the '40s, to make a "kids' cartoon" work on two levels, with hidden humor that only adults will get. (And not just cartoons; there's lots of veiled innuendo in the Adam West Batman.)

Someone on Gail Simone's forum passed along word that Michael Jelenic said the musical number in the Birds of Prey episode had run afoul of Cartoon Network's standards and practices people, so they had to have new animation done for part of it. That may be why the episode has been pushed back on the CN schedule, whereas it presumably aired without any changes in Australia.

Wouldn't surprise me,
they use their fingers to indicate penis size :wtf:

I suspected it might be something like that.

"Cartoon Network..."

Also, how the hell would new animation fix that sort of innuendo?

Also, as far as the Madnik's, it was great to see and hear Ted Kord again, though I'm honestly surprised Booster hasn't been palling around with dead comrades before.

Well, the thing about innuendo is that it can be taken to have an innocuous meaning. Kids hearing the song will just think the "Birds" are singing about the heroes' crimefighting prowess. The most blatant moment is where Huntress extends her index finger and looks at it while referring to Aquaman's "little fish." That juxtaposition probably makes the innuendo obvious enough to cross the line for American censors. So just removing that gesture, or replacing it with one less obviously phallic, would probably tone down the moment enough to satisfy the censors.

Although I'm wondering if it's a little more than that, since in this age of digital animation, altering a few seconds of video like that would be far easier and faster than it would've been in the days of cel animation, so it doesn't seem like it would require postponing the episode for several weeks.

Yeah, what is it with the show's sudden fixation on dead heroes? I think it would've worked better to pace out these tearjerkers. As it is, it's starting to get repetitive and lose its impact.

Someone involved in the show's production posted on Gail Simone's forum to offer an explanation of what has to be changed. Gail Simone had previously said that the lyrics were passed but a couple of seconds of animation would have to be altered and the reply to her was:

more than a couple actually now. there will be a couple of shots of the audience now instead of on the Birds of Prey in some parts.
He also said this in reply to a couple of other queries about what would be changed:
Huntresses' waving finger was the first thing to go. we took that out in post, but CN didn't think that was enough. I think now there is going to be a shot of the fish tank in that scene when that lyric comes up.
