Batman: The Brave and the Bold news, discussion and reviews

Oh, I wasn't criticizing the art, I was merely acknowledging my own limitations at deciphering it. If anything, I'm complimenting Maguire for coming up with such a distinctive and expressive character pose, one so unusual it went over my head.

Superman will reportedly make at least two appearances in the third season of The Brave and the Bold (which will air next spring). There'll be a World's Finest episode featuring Batman and Superman teaming up, plus a Trinity episode featuring the two of them and Wonder Woman. The relationship between Batman and Superman will be a throwback to when they were portrayed as fast friends rather than the more antagonistic relationship of modern comics. The Brave and the Bold writing staff are also hoping to put together a Superfriends homage with an episode featuring the classic line-up of characters from that show.

Can I ask, does anyone know what's made them suddenly do a 180 on Superman and Wonder Woman. There was talk that they were'nt aloud to use them and I recall reading an interview somewhere that they didn't want to use them and instead focus on the more unknown heroes.

I don't think it's a 180. They never absolutely ruled out using Superman and Wonder Woman, they just said that they were more interested in exploring the less familiar characters. Given that S and WW will make maybe two appearances each out of 65 episodes, and not until the series' final season, I see no inconsistency there. Maybe they were resistant to go to the obvious big guns at first for fear that they'd overshadow the rest, but now that they've got two successful and diverse seasons under their belt, they may have just decided that it was time, that they'd established the rest of the ensemble strongly enough that there was no harm in bringing S and WW in at last.

As for the question of being allowed to use them, I'm not sure that ever applied to Superman. The one surprising thing here is the evident lifting of the boycott on non-lead appearances for Wonder Woman. Although that's a change that's long overdue. The policy was implemented out of a desire to avoid marginalizing WW, by requiring that her every appearance must be a leading role, but it ended up having the opposite effect, marginalizing her by making her largely absent from shows like Smallville and The Batman that could've been good showcases for her, the way they were for other guest characters like Green Arrow, J'onn J'onnz, et al.

Embargoes on using certain characters come and go, as well as limitations on the conditions under which they can be used. It's part of the shifting legal landscape in terms of the rights to characters under deals with various producers, estates, and so forth. Blue Beetle used to be out of bounds because of rights issues relating to the old radio show. That got cleared up, or those rights expired, and Blue Beetle (all versions) is now available for appearances in film and TV. The stipulation that Wonder Woman couldn't make guest appearances stemmed from an agreement with the Marston estate, but that's obviously expired or been reworked since she's going to make guest appearances in The Brave and the Bold and Superman/Batman: Apocalypse. I wonder if the Smallville producers will finally get the go-ahead for a WW appearance on their show, too.

The Comic Book Urban Legends site hasn't tackled the Wonder Woman contract thing because it's hard to get actual details of contracts and stuff. Does anyone know how or when the contract stipulations idea first started getting thrown out there?

That would be nice. The Smallville Justice League could use more women.

Actually there's already been an oblique reference to Diana in the Smallville universe. Years ago there was a brief glimpse of a newspaper headline about a visit by the ambassador from Themyscira.

I read a few weeks back that they still won't be able to use Wonder Woman on Smallville. Yeah, this was said at Comic Con

No, no Batman or Wonder Woman

New episodes of Batman: The Brave and the Bold are finally scheduled on Cartoon Network for later this month:

September 17th - "The Siege of Starro, Part One!"
September 24th - "The Siege of Starro, Part Two!"

I haven't got around to watching "The Siege of Starro!" two-parter yet. I'll do so within the next couple of days. In the meantime Cartoon Network's October schedule has been revealed and there'll be new episodes of The Brave and the Bold throughout the month:

October 1st - "Requiem for a Scarlet Speedster!"
October 8th - "The Last Patrol!"
October 15th - "The Mask of Matches Malone!"
October 22nd - "Menace of the Madniks!"
October 29th - "Emperor Joker!"

The Siege of Starro was much better than I expected it to be. And I honestly would never have guessed they'd actually go there,
killing off a hero character!

Yeah that really blew me away. S*** got really serious all of a sudden at the end there. It was like in Superman when Darkseid casually murdered Dan Turpin in cold blood; WOAH.

And they did it again.

This time they killed off the entire Doom Patrol! Very tastefully, though.

Excellent episodes lately. They've been delving into some pretty dark areas considering how light the overall tone of the show is. Loved "The Last Patrol!" in particular.

Batgirl had a great design and Mae Whitman did an excellent job voicing her.

Double entendre hilarity: Guy Gardner boasting about fighting off an army of "one-eyed monsters". Ha!

News about future appearances: the Freedom Fighters will be in a future episode.

OT: In the comics, weren't the Freedom Fighters recently killed off and then re-launched? Are they legacy characters, or did they just "get better"?

I caught a few of the last episodes but the stories aren't that great. The only thing I've enjoyed is seeing some obscure teams and characters finally get some spotlight that is long overdue--the Doom Patrol, the Outsiders, the Metal Men, B'Wanna Beast etc.

Other than that the show is a bit too fast paced and relies a little too heavily on action and very little story. I also found the teaser structure the way it is disconnected from the main story a little weird. It just seems like a way to cram in as many DC characters as they can.
