Barney in a landslide. Barney can act like a toolbag, but there's a real person in there behind the act, and is capable of acting human. Might be an Inception-like act within an act within an act, but it's there.

Sheldon is so unlikable, it's not clear why the rest of the group actually associates with him. he's so completely self-centered and disconnected that there's no reward behind it.

Barney is actually funny, whereas Sheldon is just a nuisance and I'd actually like the show more with him turned into a minor character.

I like Sheldon, I'm pretty sure he posts here under various user names. ;)

Barney is a better dressed Wolowitz who can actually score.

Yep, Barney is actually a funny, likeable character. Sheldon Cooper is a socially awkward asshole nobody would like to be around with, in short.

Barney is considerably funnier, and moreover, I actually like the guy too.

I do prefer Big Bang by quite a long way overall though.

Yes, Barney Stinson is fundamentally more likeable. But being who he really is, that is an actor pouring sentimental glop all over the character. It's pulling punches for a marshmallowy feel-good vibe sustained mostly by steely determination to always, always think in the box about this show, unenlightened by any knowledge of the real world or real people.

But comedy is conflict. Sheldon is funnier because there's more conflict, less sentimentality.

I prefer Barney by a mile. I do have to admit that I'm not a fan of Big Bang. I've tried several times to watch an entire episode but I haven't found any of the ones I've seen to be particularly funny enough to get to the end of.

I like both characters.

But people saying that Barney is somehow likeable is puzzling to me.

They have him go through some emotional crisis every once in awhile, but we are talking about a guy who has tricked hundreds of women into having sex with him. I'm no prude and sure it's played for laughs...but it's pretty damned evil.

Barney is a bit of a sociopath.

Sheldon on the other hand just generally doesn't understand human emotion on any level.

Barney is just a chance for Neil to have a shitload of fun and even get paid for it. The show isn't afraid of letting that shine through, as seen in the musical scene up there or that Doogie Howser scene.
Part of the fun behind this character is how he's so similar to the actor playing him and yet so completely different in other regards (e.g., Neil is openly gay, has been in in a committed relationship for years and is a proud father of twins).

Oh yeah I realize that. I love NPH, and I think the Barney character is incredibly entertaining.

But Barney as a nice guy? Naahhh.

Take that womanizer element away, you end up with a very likable guy.

What single element can you remove from Sheldon Cooper to make him likable?

To paraphrase from one of the shows:

"Big Bang Theory over How i met your mother but Stinson over Cooper!"

;)

Yeah, he hates SLS too--it's how I know I'm right. Got into an arguement with him just the other day ;)

At least you know your sister would be safe near him. Barney and Kelso would have to be punched out to get the message.
