Barbarella TV series in development

I'm somewhat sceptical about whether or or not it'll work as a series, a mini-series perhaps. But a full blown series I have my doubts.

Could be fun, has a high probability of being awful but you never know. Perhaps Gaumont's French roots will help making the material work.

I very rarely call anything a bad idea without seeing a frame of footage, this is one of the few exceptions.

I really think this will have to be one of those remakes that borrows mostly the name and the title character, but reinvents everything else (the psychedlic 60's are long over, I'm afraid). It may work if it's more along the likes of Lexx, IMO.

You know, I was wondering when somebody was going to get around to reviving Barbarella. Drew Barrymore was attached to a remake a few years ago, but it disappeared into development hell.

I confess I've never read the original comics, but I always thought the movie was campy fun, if wildly uneven

"De-crucify that angel or I'll melt your face!"

You just don't get dialogue like that anymore! :)

I haven't had the opportunity to examine the comics, either, just a couple of frames that have accompanied various articles about the "source material". One depicts Barb' looking pleasingly "sated" while reclining upon a bed and playfully massaging her breasts (thus obscuring her nipples). Her robotic "partner" laments the mechanical stiffness of his motions, wishing he could have "served" her better. Another image shows Barb' adjusting a gun belt and wearing a skintight suit with ribbed sections. Her hair is styled similar to that of Marlo Thomas of "That Girl" (rather than the loose curls Jane Fonda sported in the film).

Sincerely,

Bill

Hm...I can see how they could do a remake movie, for Nostalgia sake, like the Land of the Lost, or the Recent Dark Shadows, but, as C. E. Evans says, it's hard to imagine what they could do with a Series, that does anything like the Original aside from the names and title.

About the only strategy I could think of would be to turn it into a Xena-type Series on an unrated Pay Channel like HBO (Ala Game of Thrones), which is in no way faithful to the Original, but, trying to be at all faithful to the original just doesn't sound very practical. I suppose, maybe, if they were aiming for a Comedy Central Late at Night Series, maybe they could get away with the cheezy camp.

Yet another bad reboot idea. There is no way in which Barbarella is a counter-cultural character, much less the "ultimate" one. And even if she were, who exactly is interested in seeing counter-cultural characters from decades ago?

If someone is interested in doing a sexy space opera series, how about reviving Farscape, something that is outrageous and fun, but not deliberately campy, ugh.

I agree, that's their only realistic option if they don't want this to be an instant flop. Make her a female John Crichton, which means, just make her Aeryn Sun.

"De-crucify that angel or I'll melt your face!"

Yeah, possibly the best line in the film.

ETA: IMDb quotes it as "De-crucify him or I'll melt your face!"

I defer to IMDb. I was relying on memory.

Back when I was in college, I scheduled back-to-back showings of Barbarella as a fundraiser for the campus science fiction club. As I recall, it was a profitable event.

How campy were the original comics, btw? It occurs to me that, if we're just judging the character by campy 60's movie, that might be akin to judging Batman on the basis of the Adam West series! :)

I think you're making the mistake of assuming that the movie was the "original" incarnation. The original Barbarella was actually the star of a French comic book serial. She had multiple distinct adventures over the course of twenty years (on and off) in print. The movie just adapted parts of the first collected volume of her adventures, and there were ultimately four volumes in all. So she was the heroine of an ongoing series to begin with.

The movie was campy, but the comics were more a blend of pulpy space adventure with softcore erotica.

She is a counter-culture character. Sexual liberation and the sexual revolution are the focal point of the comics.

The character is actually well-suited to episodic adventures and the fact that Refn is involved has me interested.

So what else should (or shouldn't) they remake?

Buck Rogers?
Blake's 7?
I would love to see a remake of Blake's 7 with updated effects, but, mostly true to the original spirit of the show (IE: One step forward, two steps back. The "Heroes" don't always win, but, they do gain some ground, sometimes. The twisted multi-layered schemes by the Federation/Servalan, etc)

Well, Buck Rogers has been reinterpreted several times already. (First the novella, then the newspaper strips, then the Buster Crabbe serials, then a series in the 50s (or was that Flash Gordon?), then the Glenn Larson version...) It's one of those concepts that ends up being reinvented for each new generation. To deny another adaptation would be a bit silly.

Sincerely,

Bill
