Banting Class Science Vessel: NCC-1921

Here's the aft sensors. It is a concaved sensor, but it's hard to tell from this view. You can also see 2 thrusters on the neck. I've also changed the keel sensor from blue to a textured gold. The glowey blue was a bit of a departure from what we've seen in Trek. Not a bad thing, just not for me during this era.

And here's a little shuttle I had fun making. I just worked with the general shape of the original and movie shuttles, and shrinked it down to about 3 metres across and about 4 metres in length. I really had fun with the nacelles. They may not look it, but they were a little more complicated then they seem. She's on board right now and there's easily room for 2 plus one in a squeeze.

arg- computer is soooo slow... 3.5 hours for the monitor and command console this morning. I still have to make the chairs and TL alcoves (as seperate componants of course).

So the bridge is contemporary TOS and movie circular. Something I’ve always been fond of. I decided to use the NX-2000 Excelsior bridge wrap around console as inspiration for this bridge. The display wraps around the bridge and is completely customizable to the users needs. If they need more display area, it can widen out (though not into the adjacent user’s space). The user touches the console and the menu comes up to engage the default station settings (eg Operations), or Change station (eg. Emergency Ship Systems)… This allows multiple personnel to work the same station if needed.

I also made the chairs and TL alcove that has access to 2 lifts. Oh yes- the chairs lock in place mechanically, but move on magnet levitation units built into the floor. They can move to various spots as needed, and they can add chairs if needed. The mechanical lock is a safety redundant feature in the event of complete power failure. Though in that situation, they're pretty much screwed anyway.

Why does the center have 2 steps down if there is nothing at that level? Someone going to the nav position would have to take 2 steps down then 1 step up. A little redundant from a practicality standpoint.

It's completely practical. There is a lot of activity on a Starship bridge, as you know. When personnel are communicating with conn and helm, that extra step helps maintain the Captain's clear view of the main viewer and other stations.

From a technological point of view, it's not terribly convoluted to contruct a bridge with an extra step.

From an aestetic point of view, it looks neat.

Though of course form and function are all relative to the viewer's perspective. I.e., you either like it, or you don't, but it does serve a purpose.

That all being said, I did consider a completely flat bridge, with no pit and only one small platform for the Captain's chair, but I've always liked the pit's. Just not Cherry pits. They hurt my teeth.

Any thoughts on the little alcove to the two lifts? I found that making the bridge stations look the same, yet upgrading them at the same time, was less a departure then the alcove, because we didn't see anything like that until 2296(?) with Sulu's Excelsior. I don't know. As long as it LOOKs Trek for the time period- I'm happy.

What I'm not happy with, is how the bridge rail is connected. You can see that they're all like a textured Acrylite.

On a different note- I haven't done a bloody thing on the ship this week. It's been a lousy, exhausting, shitty, low paying, depressing, Christmas is going to suck for my family week. Good thing I get laid a lot or I'd be a cranky bastard... Er, crankier bastard.

I agree with Sojourner, and I have (maybe an answer for it): if you would make the captains chair two steps higher, you wouldn't have to do any steps at all.

No, that last step down is not helping anyone. You have nothing on that level. Look at your own image again. Person enters bridge, takes one step down, then another, then steps back up to nav position. It does nothing.

If your saying people on the bridge have to routinely get up, walk 5 feet and stand next to the conn and helm stations to talk, then you have some really bad noise issues on your bridge.

^I understand what you're getting at, but it worked well in TOS, and in that series, we saw instanses where there was a lot of activity on the bridge. When personnel are just communicating general information, they can walk over- and if it's really so difficult for them to step down to the lowest part (where they would be standing to talk with helm or nav) then they have serious physical issues and shouldn't be on a starship.

that being said, the design of a circular bridge with multi-leveled command centre worked for Starfleet on Enterprise through to the movies, so the precendent has been set. I'm just working it.

Well- I've done all that my computer can handle... The final background image is from the NASA space photo gallery.

Nice work, Patrickivan. It's like if the Grissom had been designed with someone with an idea about functionality within the Trekverse. No sideways-turning diagonal turbolifts there.

(Oh, snap. ;))

Thanks :)

I wish I could do more with it. My comp just gets so frustratingly slow at times- for everything...

That being said, I'm pretty happy with how it turned out as it is.
