Bad Robot & Paramount Extend Partnership to 2018

It would be awesome to see another Trek film. I realize we haven't seen the third film, and this doesn't mean a 4th Trek film, but I will still want another film after this one. MOAR!

I doubt this means another Trek film in and of itself. That would mean a two-year turnaround after Trek 13.

That's not to say they won't extend again, of course. :)

I'd love a TV series, but I also hope they would continue with the movies.

This is good news. I'm sure it'll return to TV at some point down the line, maybe way down the line, hopefully in my lifetime. At least The Expanse looks pretty promising in the mean time.

Well before we get a 4th film the 3rd film has to be a success.

PM is still out there, still posting the same lies as ever. He's not going to let a little thing like reality interfere with his copypaste rants!

I'm pretty sure that Paramount would rather have the $500 million they make every so many years with the feature films than the $20 million from TOS merchandising.

And back to the "core fan base" argument again

Here's my take. First of all, my dad (like many posters here) is a first run fan of TOS, and watched all the TOS movies in the theater (even got my mom to see the last one, and that is saying something). He has not watched a single frame of TNG, or any other spin off material. However, he enjoyed Abrams Trek as much fun as TOS (one of the reasons why I keep up that point).

Similarly, I know many other first run fans who have no desire to watch TNG (likewise, fans who don't care about TOS). Abrams Trek was ok by them.

Finally, my wife doesn't like Star Trek-period. She enjoyed the first Abrams movie very much and felt like she could engage the material, and not be so removed by the backstory.

At some point in time the whole "not my Star Trek" rhetoric becomes just as divisive as the product itself. At some point in time, the problem isn't CBS or Paramount or Abrams but the argument that whatever they do is bad. I know that hatred can be a strong unifying force, but man, how many potential new fans are being alienated because of the anti-Abrams rhetoric?

Sorry for the long post, but the argument against Abrams has soured for a long time for me. I understand that it isn't for everyone, but that doesn't make it less Star Trek.

The thing is: Star Trek is such a huge property and there are so many iterations, we've had a fractured fan base for decades. No one is going to be happy all of the time and that's okay. I don't like Voyager but you don't see me rushing into the Voyager forums or Facebook groups claiming that it is the worst Trek ever and that it will be decanonized by the next movie/series. No, I respect that its something the Voyager fans like and I ignore it for the most part.

The problem is people like Para have made Trek fans look bad in general. They're rumor mongers who believe the only way is their way and that everyone else needs to get out of the way. Then they play the martyr saying that they've been bullied. There's been a lot of misdeeds on both sides of that Facebook war but Para is far from innocent.

But I am happy that this relationship between Paramount and Bad Robot is continuing. The M:I films under BR's watch have been great and there have been two fairly solid Trek outings as well.

Just a reminder to all the Abrams haters out there. The man and his company saved this nearly dead franchise.

Abrams two Star Trek films were wildly successful and are the two of the three most successful ST films at the box office when you adjust for inflation...There is a vast minority of fans who prefer Star Trek returns to it's days of being totally irrelevant (Voyager, ENT) and appealing to a very small audience, but to the general audience Star Trek is back on top for the first time in 20+ years.

I think that's what irks me the most, as well. It's one thing to dislike something and to ask questions, and something else entirely to go where those fans are and just constantly slam their favorite movie/TV show/comic book. To me that takes a hateful, petty spirit.

That irks me as well. I have heard many arguments and discussion points against Abrams Trek, some well founded, others a matter of personal taste. My struggle will always be the hatred that is expressed because I feel like no meaningful discussion can happen after that. Not saying that it won't happen, but it just feels very limited in a dialogue.

I don't have Facebook, but I recognize this sermon from a couple of general movie sites. There, he is much more specific that the only way to end his Civil War is to give the minority what they want, because the majority are brainless falsefans who will watch anything with Star Trek in the title.
