And back to the "core fan base" argument again
Here's my take. First of all, my dad (like many posters here) is a first run fan of TOS, and watched all the TOS movies in the theater (even got my mom to see the last one, and that is saying something). He has not watched a single frame of TNG, or any other spin off material. However, he enjoyed Abrams Trek as much fun as TOS (one of the reasons why I keep up that point).
Similarly, I know many other first run fans who have no desire to watch TNG (likewise, fans who don't care about TOS). Abrams Trek was ok by them.
Finally, my wife doesn't like Star Trek-period. She enjoyed the first Abrams movie very much and felt like she could engage the material, and not be so removed by the backstory.
At some point in time the whole "not my Star Trek" rhetoric becomes just as divisive as the product itself. At some point in time, the problem isn't CBS or Paramount or Abrams but the argument that whatever they do is bad. I know that hatred can be a strong unifying force, but man, how many potential new fans are being alienated because of the anti-Abrams rhetoric?
Sorry for the long post, but the argument against Abrams has soured for a long time for me. I understand that it isn't for everyone, but that doesn't make it less Star Trek.
