Arguably began with the Monkees, perhaps before. But at the very least in 1985 they had the New Kids on the Block.

What about Girl Bands then? Would it be shocking enough if Marty sings Spice Girls songs?
They made a commercial breakthrough, but there were plenty of bands in 1985 who anticipated and definitely influenced Nirvana's sound. They were just more underground. If someone had played me a Nirvana record in 1985 I would have been interested but it wouldn't have sounded revolutionary compared to what I was already listening to (Hüker Dü, Meat Puppets, the Minutemen &c.). In fact when I first saw Nirvana open for Dinosaur Jr. in 1991 they didn't stand apart from any number of other bands I had seen (though they were definitely one of the loudest).

"Girl-bands" also were around before 1985. The Go-Gos, Heart, The Bangles.
The Shirelles, Martha and the Vandellas, the Supremes, the Crystals, the Shangri-Las...
Yeah, girl-bands were pretty damn extensive before 1985, probably more-so than boy-bands.
I would hardly call Heart a girl-band. For one thing, they can actually SING and PLAY. Plus, there are three guys in the band the last time I checked...

You guys are killing me... can we at least agree that obnoxious teen singers like Justin Bieber and Miley Cirus were not around like they are today? 
Back to the Future isn't so much about what was different in the past as it was about what was the same. Mainly, about how Marty's parents were still like him in several ways despite the culture being different. The cultural and technological differences were just a side thing, and I'd argue that we have just as many cultural differences from 1985 to 2015 as there were from 1955 to 1985 as portrayed in this movie.
For instance, here's the main things they highlight:
-Vehicles like the Delorean look like futuristic science fiction
-Fashion is different, from Marty's vest to the clothes worn at the dance
-Food and beverage isn't the same and comes in different containers
-Number of televisions in a household, and that reruns aren't common
-Political figures are different, one of which used to be an actor
-Technology like camcorders are common and household
-The city and school have more apparent cleanliness
-The slang used is different
-Skateboards are not prominent
-Music styles are different
And that's pretty much it aside from gags and things seen in the background. All of the things on this list have a modern-day analog.
Now if you want a movie that becomes impossible to recreate in today's age, that would probably be the Goonies.

Seriously.. The movie takes our heros back to the 80's where the movie spends some obligatory time making fun of 80's fashion, music, technology and genre movies in general.. Then the story about righting past wrongs and setting a course for a better future unfolds..

I'd love a Back to the Future 4 in 2015, where Marty realizes his temporal meddling lead to the timeline we're in now and not the BttF 2 version.
Sadly, that's often all a band needs to be. I find that if a band is too loud, I can't hear them properly because everything starts to bleed into everything else.

I was 15 when the first film came out, and 20 when III came out.
A mere pup in both cases. Although at the time, I didn't appreciate that.
Now, to the question, can the movie be made today? I doubt it. All the fun of the original trilogy would be absent from any remake.
