Babylon 5

I agree, even the VHS tapes looked better. I still bought the DVDs though, mainly for the commentaries.

As will I, even though I bought access to the remastered version on iTunes.
I refuse to pay for digital content like that. I don’t want it magically going away on me.

Now, I do hope the price comes down from $150.

Wait... it's cheaper in Canada even before you take the exchange into account??

Amazon.com - US$152.99 ~ C$202

Amazon.ca - C$129.99 ~ US$99

That's unusual. (For some reason, I had thought the US had it listed at $99.99, which would have put them right on par with each other.)

When The Digital Bits broke the details about the set, they had it as $99.99 USD. I wouldn’t be surprised if this is some kind of error on Amazon’s part, or even a standard maneuver. I’ve noticed surprisingly often stuff I pre-order on day one has a lower price at delivery, though only once has the really meat of their policy come to pass, where the price dips lower and the goes back up a little by the release date. Maybe they intentionally overestimate what they want to charge on pre-orders, so it feels like a better deal.

The Engadet article had it listed for $100 to. No idea why it's showing for $150. I'd import it from Canada if it's region free to save $50.

Canada is region A, the same as the US, so you wouldn't have to worry about that! :)

Unfortunately, I've heard from other Americans on the board here that apparently Amazon Canada no longer ships outside of Canada, so importing from here may not be easy, sorry. (And some people in the US might be put off by the bilingual packaging.)

Hopefully the Amazon US price drops soon, so that you don't have to worry about it.

That's weird. I imported the German version of 21 Jump Street the series since it had the original music, and I've imported Doctor Who stuff from Amazon UK. I'll have to check Canada.

High five!

I still need to import Eureka. According to the thread over on Blu Ray reviews, the German version is better encoded than the American release. The same appears to be true for A-Team. But I forgot the EU vendor that did the Blu Rays for that show. I'm not sure what the music rights are on foreign release of A-Team. They might or might not be the original music.

No idea why American releases these days haven't been as great as some German releases.

Despite this, I have high hopes based on the MAX release. Now, if they can encode the Blu Rays properly, I'll be a happy camper. I might wait for a review before pulling the trigger. I got burnt when I bought the Eureka set. It didn't live up to my expectations, but I can stream it on both Prime and Peacock.

Just pre-ordered the 4K version of The Road Home from Amazon UK for £19.99. No sign of the remastered B5 Blu-ray set being available to order there yet - not even a placeholder.

$130 does sound overpriced given that I paid £63 ($82) for The Next Generation on Blu-ray and that was seven seasons (178 episodes) and had much work done to improve the SFX. I'm hoping the Region B version of B5 is no more than £100 ($130) for five seasons (110 episodes) plus The Gathering in not quite HD quality. I know WB seem to be struggling and need the cash, but still...

This might be a wait for Prime day 2024 purchase or Black Friday 2024 one. Physical media is dying a slow death, so this price point seems really high.

Forget it. I love "Babylon 5", but I won't dish out that kind of cash for the Blu-Ray box. I just as soon stick with watching it on streaming - commercials and all.

Prices are high because it's dying a slow death. Smaller market means fewer sales means higher prices.

$26/season seems more than reasonable to me.

Hell, when I bought it the first time, it was $90+ a season. And now, knowing the special features aren't making the jump, I'm a little scared about the state my DVDs might be in at this point before I get to back them up to a Plex server. I've only had a few old discs start to degrade in their cases and be unable to be played so far, but it's super not-fun to run in to.

Still, though, I do fully expect the Amazon US price to drop to $99 between now and the release date, probably permanently and not just as an intermittent dip.

You were able to get TNG for that price because you waited a long time. Provided it stays in print, you can wait out B5 for a lower price too.

I really didn't have to wait very long after season 7 was released and the complete set became available to get that price - possibly because sales of physical media were already in severe decline by that time. I can afford to pay £100/$130, so I will probably bite the bullet on this in the naive expectation that further B5 universe stories might get commissioned. I do not like buying mere streaming access to shows or movies in the vain hope that I won't get shafted a few years down the line.
