Babylon 5 viewing order

I am pausing this watching of Messages of Earth to inform that there is one Human male who will not get much sleep tonight....

"Messages of Earth," eh?

And so it begins...

Yep, And I am stopping at the Severed Dreams to adsorb it :)

Still love the line

"This is Ambassador Delenn of the Minbari. Babylon 5 is under our protection. Withdraw or be destroyed."
"Negative. We have authorite here. Do not force us to engage your ship."
"Why not? Only one Human captain has ever survived battle with a Minbari fleet. He is behind me. You are in front of me. If you value your lives, be somewhere else!"

:bolian:

Many people single out Severed Dreams as the finest episode of B5. I'm not among them, but it is still f'ing amazing.

It's also pretty much the halfway point of the series. Well, technically the next episode is, but who's counting? :)

Just curious, who is in your Avatar?

Well it is a great episode. "Messages from Earth" impressed me more as the payoff episode is easy to do, but that was a great "build up" episode.

"Dust to Dust" - this is a very solid episode and while being a stand alone episode, carrys its own water as far as overall plot and development. Kosh is a manipulative alien, and they will use all there pawns before they themselves lift a finger. Liked the "danger" sign next to Kosh at the end. Dust as a Psy-corps project does not shock me. They would love to have a drug that causes Telepathy. Walter Koeing is a underrated actor.

"Exogenesis" - Zzzzzzzzzzzzz.... Not a strong effort in my mind. good for flavor, but why does the doctor or the captain try to get information about the previous wars from the symboiants<sp> long memories, sure they could of found some useful information.

"Messages from Earth" - I really REALLY like this episode. I happen to think its brilliant. My random prediction is that we know who Garibaldi was with when he saw the shadow ship. This also payoff a lot of little threads laid out over the previous episodes. And it logically pays off with the next two episodes....

"Point of No Return" - It was fun to see the guest star, and I guess I understand the rivalry as DS9 and B5 did share some of the themes (From what I understand, she wanted to sooth some of the fandom craziness between the series) and the ending with Vir and Londo was classic. "No, I am going to order in"... And if I had a ship and was dealing with blackwatch types, I would be thinking that living in hyperspace might not be a bad idea. I love the fact that the space battle was on TV, in B5, so you are like the people who are watching it, trying to catch every little bit of what is going on.

"Severed Dreams" - Well, this was a amazing episode. Nuff said. Also liked that it did not resort to a deus ex machina ending (Cough DS9 sacrifice of angels cough). Of course, this will play in Clarks hands at home with aliens defending b5. Poor Mars. our good guys will need to have ships to keep defecting or obtain some sort of shipyard, as otherwise they will be ground underneath the production of earth.

As a note - I love chrome, my computer crashed after I typed that all out, and when I restored, all my typing was saved. Whoohoo!

My random prediction is that we know who Garibaldi was with when he saw the shadow ship.
Unfortunatly it's not brought up again in the series proper, as Garbaldi's story is a reference to something already shown in a B5 comic book (though I think your suspicion of who he was with is correct): http://midwinter.com/lurk/comic/008.html

Btw, what did you think of the Nightwatch storyline? I literally cheered when Zach tore off that arm band! :)

Aha, I figured it was him or his GF at the time, 50/50...that answers that.....

As for the nightwatch, sadly, we are never too far away from that type of stupidity from rising up. I was glad that Zach tore off that arm-band, as I was surprised that it took him so long to get to that point, but good for him.

That, and I really expected the baby face new Lt. (Forget his name, but he was the one they where thinking about letting in on the conspiracy) didn't get killed in the big firefight for B5. Glad as that would of been a "Cheap trick" of sorts.

Also, it must of been odd for Mira Furlan fresh off her own country being torn apart by civil war (and I would have to see when this was aired, might of still been going on) to play it on a TV series...

It's not quite a case of All There In The Manual. Way back in "Infection," where Garibaldi is making small talk with the reporter, he talked about how he met Sinclair when he was working as a shuttle pilot, and they had to hike back to civilization on Mars after a crash. He left out the part about the giant terrifying alien ship being dug out of the dirt and the secret Psi-Corps brainwashing factory, though.

Also, it must of been odd for Mira Furlan fresh off her own country being torn apart by civil war (and I would have to see when this was aired, might of still been going on) to play it on a TV series...

JMS said:
Funny thing is, how much as you note the show corresponds to some of the things Mira's been through...some of it intentional, knowing that if I dig into this area, it'll come out of her with the ring of truth...some of it quite unintentional. When I finished writing "Severed Dreams," and the actors got it, Mira's first words to me were, "So...how long DID you live in Yugoslavia?" The parallel wasn't intentional...but it fit.

You'll have to wait until late S5.

Trivia note: JMS once had fans send in their favorite quotes from B5 and the above was the all-time fan fave.

Thanks David, good catch! (Guess I would catch it on a repeat viewing...)

Trust me, you'll catch a LOT on a repeat viewing of the series that probably didn't even register the first time around.

Incidentally, Garibaldi's misadventure with Sinclair was also obliquely referenced in 'Babylon Squared' when he flashed back to Lise dumping him.

Fair enough, thought with the eyes it was from Stargate....might be Lyta Alexander if she had long hair. anyways, that proves my weakness for those of red hair.

It is Lyta, played by the always lovely Pat Tallman... but that's all I can say without revealing some things that are better experienced the way they were intended.

Hey, Distorted Humor, I didn't catch if you mentioned it, but what do you think about Marcus Cole? Personally, he is one of my favorite B5 characters, but I haven't seen you mention him much.

Once again, you are at a point where I can say to you, enjoy the next few episodes, catch your breath, and get ready for some more awesome episodes later in the season (including, what may be my favorite episodes, the upcoming 2 parter).

Marcus Cole brings a nice physicality to the series (as in downbelow fights) and its good to have a face to the Rangers. I like him better then Kiffer who got Kippered, but so far nothing makes him noteworthy to me except for the humor of his and Susan romantic subplot. Then again, so far all he done on screen is flirt with Susan and use his minbari whipping stick to good use. I didn't care for Exogenous<sp> and that is his main role so far.

and yes, Pat Tillman keeps looking better with more of her red hair :)

Marcus has a tremendous amount more to show and do. And a biting wit that serves the show well. ;)

But speaking of Ms. Tallman.....
