Aventine

^^ That's now how the nacelles look at all; you just mated an image of the Whitestar with an image of the Enterprise.

I didn't draw it; it's an image I found looking up the ship's specs over the net.

Fictitiously yours, Trent Roman

I think there's a bit of confusion here; Trent was referring to the Prometheus (which is the image he posted), but I think Aaron's comment was referring to the Aventine.

Oh, I didn't realize that. Sorry.

Still, as far as I know, the Prometheus doesn't look anything like the image he posted (what fanon class is that, btw?), but more like this:

Oy. Look, I know little of ship designs and the like. I thought there was a joke to be made, googled 'Vesta class', and this is one of the images that came up. I apologize for whatever errors and confusion have come of it.

Mark, what is the weapons loadout of the Vesta-class? And I mean number of Mark XII Phaser Cannons, torpedo tubes, number of torpedoes, and what kinds of torpedoes.

Judge: I can't give you exact weapons specs at this moment, I do have a list of systems that are visible or will be visible on the outside after the upgrade.

As for the Phaser type, they are probably XII.

4x Forward torpedo bay
4x Rear torpedo bay
2x Phaserbank bottom of primary hull
2x Mark XII phaser cannon (Front)
2x Phaserbanks top of primary hull
1x Phaserstrip bottom of secondary hull
2x Phaserstrip pylons,
1x Phaserstrip rear top

This should provide an overlapping 360 degrees range.

This is by no means an official listing yet. :)

For something close to ortho's, see the blog
"Real" orthographic views will be available after the update/refit for Typhon Pact is finished.

Clawhammer: Being used to subdivision modeling, I find the wireframe view of the Aventine on your blog to be completely baffling. Am I right in remembering that you mentioned, somewhere, that you did the Aventine in a parametric/solid modeling package? If I may be so bold to ask; what have been the advantages, to you, of such an approach to starship modeling?

I've googled but it wasn't immediately apparent. Modeling isn't really my area of expertise; my job is 2D/interaction design/web development, but I do enjoy dabbling in 3D as a hobby. It was mentioned to have a steep learning curve, so I like it already. ;)

Those Vesta-class ships are going to be a force to be reckoned with . The slipstream drive combined with that shitload of weapons! Covering the whole 360 degrees would look amazing on screen. If only...

All this preoccupation with weapons. I'm more interested in what kind of sensor systems the Vesta class has, the technical specs of its propulsion systems, things like that.

Disillusion:
The method of modeling is a personal choice, like painters would prefer oil above waterpaint or so. :)

A very tiny advantage over poly models: if for some reason the Aventine should become a scale model, one could machine it easier because everything is already a solid closed volume. But with current conversion and 3D print technology this is also very possible with decent poly models.

Yes indeed, what use are weapons when you can't supply the energy to fire them or guide them to the target?

Sensors, I haven't give it much thought yet. My first concern was to have a position for the sensors around the hull. I'm still working on a document with deeper specs, but it might take some time before that is finished.

I've got a feeling that wasn't quite what Christopher was getting at...:)

Definitely not. Starfleet's mission statement is "to seek out new life," not "to bring new forms of death." Weapons are a necessary evil, a last resort.

For what it's worth, I agree. I don't care too much about the Vesta-class weapons systems, I'm interested in its capabilities as they relate to its exploration or diplomatic missions :)

Some would say that weapons act is a deterrent even on diplomatic missions. :)

But I get the point...we want to see more benign and intriguing exploration and contact missions rather over the top BANG-BANG stuff... the galaxy's seen enough of that for a while.:bolian:

^Agreed. War is quite a dramatic plot device--but at this rate, another true war will get a LOT of eye-rolling--and rightfully so. It's the same with time travel.

Still...this IS nice:

4x Forward torpedo bay
4x Rear torpedo bay
2x Phaserbank bottom of primary hull
2x Mark XII phaser cannon (Front)
2x Phaserbanks top of primary hull
1x Phaserstrip bottom of secondary hull

This works well even for explorers and peacekeepers. See, this indicates that Starfleet is a firm (though perhaps reluctant) believer in Peace Through Strength.

As Mr. T would say, "Ah pitty da FOO'"--who messes with Captain Dax, and the Aventine!

Still, Assured Destruction isn't quite enough to deter most attacks. After all, if a few well-aimed shots could disable the thing....

So...how about shield capabilities?
