Okay, looks like it had six jets...so I guess that makes it a baker's quinjet.

It's because the design (at least initially) called for five engines:

The diagram at the bottom labels 4 of the engines, and the big, unlabeled afterburner at the center makes 5.

That reminds me of a lifting body. I think one of the 1984 series GI JOE spaceplanes took that design.

You cant always count nozzles to count jets. The R-7 Souz launcher has dozens of nozzles, but only five engines. So I might say that the Quinjet has two pair of jets for forward thrust--and a recessed gas-generator to run the lift fans under each wing. There is your five jets. Faster than Osprey...

"The Bus" is closer to an A-380 than a C-17 in terms of size, or so I've been hearing. But the engine placement issue is something mentioned by other friends of mine off-line.

The original quinjet dated back to the John Buscema days, but that refined late 70s version probably originated with Perez or Byrne.

I suspect Byrne, but it's good to have a memory refresher re: Buscema the Elder.

^You'd be correct...I just did a little hands-on research (made possible by the Avengers DVD-ROM from a few years back), and it looks like the first appearance of that distinctive design was #187, Sept. 1979, illustrated by Byrne.

So is "The Bus" a Sextjet?

The aft engines and wing sort of bugged me too, it seemed like a design addition that didn't need to be made on top of the other, though minor, modifications they made to the jet.

It just looks needlessly silly and added just to make the jet look comic-booky cool.
