Who will win? Will either top Avatar? https://www.boxofficemojo.com/alltime/world/
Place you bets, and may the best Disney movie win.

Marvel will probably take this installment. Catch Avatar? Probably not.

Either way, the Mouse(tm.) is getting a boat load of cheese.....

I’m guessing $2.5B for Endgame and $2.4B for Star Wars for #2 and #3 all time
And that’s giving Star Wars a lot of benefit of the doubt. It’s only about $500mil extra compared to previous Avengers but a cool $1 Billion more for Star Wars compared to previous one.

Even using your numbers, that's 4.9 Billion in BoxOffice on a $600 million total investment... :wtf:

License to print money, me thinks.....
Oh it’s good to be owning Disney stock that’s for sure. Though I think it was mentioned that Endgame budget is about $600mil just by itself. Have no idea ST IX budget.

End Game was rumored to be in the $275 range with an additional $100 + for marketing. IX was rumored to be $225 to $250 ball park. I don't remember reading anything that stated either production budget crossing the $300 mill mark.

I read somewhere combined allocated budget for Infinity War and Endgame was $1billion and Infinity War only using a third of it. Will google it when I get home.

Just googled it too. Looks like you're right, End Game is in the $550 t0 $600 mill ballpark. That's nuts...

I think it'll be Endgame because it's a coalescence of 21 films featuring dozens of beloved characters that's been building up for the last 11 years.

Yeah, The Rise of Skywalker is the end of an era and 40 years of build up, but the Marvel Cinematic Universe is far more condensed than the Skywalker saga.

They should both earn enough to do their franchises proud. However it feels as if The Avengers have built up to their climax whereas Star Wars is ready to have fork stuck in it.

Feel free. Anyone who predicts anything will be wrong often enough that embarrassment about the fact is stupid.

That said, you might want to look at what the past numbers for all these things are before you settle into preemptive smuggery - Endgame would have to leap so substantially above any previous Marvel movie in order to pass the worldwide numbers for Avatar that any smart bookie would post long odds against it. Hell, the second most successful film in history is neither SW nor Marvel, but a 20 year-old movie also directed by Cameron.

Avengers easily. Infinity war was a great movie enjoyed my most everyone and it was a cliffhanger. Who will come back? Who will stay dead? Everyone I know can't wait for Endgame. It's the culmination of 10 plus years of storytelling.

OTOH TLJ turned off a lot of people to Star Wars. We saw that with the disappointing returns for Solo(which wasn't a bad movie). That's going to have a negative effect on opening weekend . They're billing it as the end of the saga but frankly ROTJ already did that. All they're doing at this point is milking the cash cow and it shows. I know it's only anecdotal, but those same people I know who cant wait for Endgame had a very "meh" attitude to the new Star Wars trailer. I hope J.J can steer it back on course.

I doubt it will happen, but I hope Endgame surpasses the box office of Avatar because IMO that was pure shit.
PS: Adjusted for inflation, Gone With The Wind is still number one

On this ... I watched Avatar and I'm like a kid following the Pied Piper who doesn't make it into the cave. It's like everyone around me loved it. Even Stuart my Mother-in-law's friend in his late seventies was practically glowing! I thought it was visually pretty but the story was so obvious and a little grating. (Evil, plundering, 'militarised' humans exploit innocents and their planet's resources etc. etc.) Saw it and mostly forgot it. Like it had no sense of investment or resonance. With The Avengers/Marvel heroes and definitely the original Star Wars heroes (and many here would add the new additions) you have a history with the characters. It makes a difference.

Even the new Avatar films probably won't pass Avatar.

Endgame
will bring in more global box office than Rise. Star Wars movies don't do well in China, whereas the MCU does gangbusters over there.

Endgame for sure. The MCU is doing strong in both reviews and visitors while the Star Wars movies have been getting more flake by both fans and reviewers. There is still plenty of love for Star Wars, no doubt. But still, Endgame will win.

Endgame, and not even a question. But they'll both make an obscene amount of money each. :)
