Spoilers Avengers: Endgame grade and discussion thread

How do you rate Avengers: Endgame?

More random thoughts as they occur to me: -
  • Ageing Cassie up seems to have been done with an eye towards introducing Stature into the mix (or whichever codename they end up going with) but it's radically altered the family dynamic for any third Ant-man movie.
  • Wakanda has been without a King for half a decade and it's not like he was there for very long, so I can see this being an issue in BP2.
  • I'm sure I lost track of a few details, but is past Gamora still around or not? Are they just starting over with her character arc or is she gone for good?
  • And I'm assuming the entire Spider-Man cast (sans Happy) was dusted, elsewise the ones that weren't probably wouldn't be in highschool anymore. I mean Ned didn't seem to have aged and assuming 'Far From Home' takes place after this, neither does anyone else going by it's trailer.
  • On the other hand, if the MCU's Miles Moralis wasn't dusted, then this may have aged him up to the point where he would credibly have a long term admiration for Spider-Man and be within walking distance of the age where his story could kick off. See also: Kamala Khan.
  • So what were the rules of time travel again? Is there a Loki and another Tesseract still in play? Is causality just out the window now? I mean we saw him escape AND we saw him in prison on Asgard.
  • What about what the Ancient One said about the consequences of removing the stones from the universe? Does that also apply once Thanos destroyed them, or is that OK because their atoms are just dispersed and thus, still within the universe?
  • Between Morgan, Cassie & Lila they appear to be setting the foundation for a Young Avengers lineup at some point down the line. Or at least, leaving the door open for one.
Speaking of which, is AoS season 6 set five years later?
I guess we'll wait and see. I think as epic as this all has been, it's thrown a serious wrench in a lot of the other storylines, for the TV shows and the movies. Kind of Ironic really since this is typically what happens in the comics too when a big tie-in event happens smack in the middle of a bunch of solo titles' ongoing story arcs.
Also, in retrospect, it may have been almost merciful to cancel all the Netflix shows given how much this would disrupt them.

Saw it today, do we have to spoiler code? I will for now just as it's not out yet in places and some probably won't realise and come in here.

So there's too many positives to list, so for a negative- I kinda knew it wouldn't happen but I was really hoping for the Defenders to appear from one of those portals :) Especially after Jarvis from Agent Carter was in the movie

Anyone spot that random kid at Tony's funeral, I thought so but had to google after to check and it was the kid from Iron Man 3, aw.

I was expecting everything to just reset really, so it was kinda surprising it's now 2023 in universe, and though everyone's back the world went through 5 years of them being gone. And those who came back are now gonna be 5 years younger than those they left behind.
Really interested to see how the future of the MCU deals with this, esp Agents of Shield and Spider-Man:FFH. I'm hoping not but I can imagine it will be skimmed over a lot, given the TV/Sony angle. ie. how all Peter's classmates in the trailer are just normal, so they all got snapped, seems fairly unlikely

Oh and still no Lady Sif :(

But yeah apart from those things excellent all round. Still trying to process it all, but I will say the SFX of Banner-Hulk was amazing!!

^Yeah, I did not expect them to bring back the kid from IM3. A nice touch and not one that would ever have occurred to me.

Oh and given that the whole thread is spoiler coded, I wouldn't worry about it.
The Russo’s have no future plans to direct any more marvel movies
Well one could hardly expect them to top that run. I actually kind of feel sorry for whomever has to follow that up whenever the next Avengers movie rolls around.

I imagine so. Maybe that’s how they save Black Widow as well.
I don't know. I mean they made it fairly explicit Nats gone for reals, so it'd be a bit strange to have her suddenly pop back up in a later movie. (I'm assuming the Black Widow movie will be a period piece like 'Captain Marvel'.)

As for Gamora, I didn't notice her at the funeral with the other Guardians and I didn't quite catch what was written over that picture of her Quill was looking at before Thor came onboard, so I may be missing something. Of course, aside from Nebula, none of those people mean anything to her so perhaps she's just gone off on her own for a bit.

It was a fitting end to the the decade long MCU so far.

Some of my fave moments. Can't remember all.

  • [*]Ant-Man outside Avengers HQ wanting to eat a Taco which gets blown away by the Spaceship. Rocket, Nebula exiting and walking by "we've got a weirdo here", then Hulk or Rodney bringing him a new Taco.:guffaw:
[*]Name dropping and discussing time travel movies/series

[*]Thor's belly, online gaming intimidation :guffaw::rofl:
[*]Valkyre :adore: being alive, later becoming the new Asguardian "Queen"

    [*]Cap in the Elevator :guffaw:
[*]Cap fighting Cap, thinking it's Loki and America's @ss comment
[*]Cap being worthy, lifting Thor's Hammer. During the final battle Thor to Cap switching weapons "you can have the small one" :guffaw:

[*]Jarvis (Agent Carter) being old man Starks driver :bolian:

[*]Banner seeing Hulk smashing/stomping in NY :guffaw:
    [*]Falcon becoming the new Cap

    [*]Cap and Peggys dance/kiss :adore::luvlove:

I walked out of the theater disappointed. The movie isn't bad, it's a good flick, but the plot holes and story decisions hurt the film in my opinion.

I can't help but compare it to the original comics and what we got isn't nearly as good. No Nebula getting the Gauntlet baffles me and truly wastes much of her story line and character growth. That scene is a classic and right there with "the snap" for story importance. No Celestial battle, while not as egregious a foul, is still a missed opportunity. It's a 3 hour film so there is no reason for not having a way to introduce them and incorporate them into the film. Nothing with Soul World... again a missed cool story thread.

The first 1.5 or 2 hours felt slow to me and sorta boring. I felt nothing other than "it's about time" when Stark died. The time travel... I fucking hate time travel and didn't care much for it here. Doc Strange got all the heroes assembled really fast. Not sure how he pulled that one off. No after credits or mid credits scene really sucked.

Cap stole the show for me. Hulk had his moments, but I got sick of him at times. Thor was great. The last battle was well done. All the characters were juggled well with screen time. That was very impressive. Loved the Jarvis cameo.

It was NOT perfect. Will try to expand on that tomorrow.

Steve’s use of Thor’s hammer was a war whoop moment for me. Keeping a tight focus on the original Avengers was a smart move, as it let them really close off their individual stories, in a way that was really satisfying.

The moment when every hero possible steps out of the portals, my heart soared. It was cheesy and cliched but my GOODNESS I loved every second, especially when Spider-Man and Iron Man reunite. Ant-Man stomping the life out of the giant baddie was a nice moment, as was the Tony-Gaunlet keep away scene.

I was a bit sad that Loki didn’t get to contribute to the final battle, but they did a nice job setting up the potential for him to cause trouble in an alternate timeline.

I will say this - if Thor doesn’t get to be part of Guardians of the Galaxy 3 - I’ll be sorely disappointed.

I know it’s been 10 years but it does seem too soon to end some of the characters. There’s still lefty of stories to tell with them. I would have just done the Bond route and just recasted them. It’ll be like a different artist in a comic book.

Which ones?

- Nebula killed her past self
- Thanos died before his Guardians (and later) appearances
- Loki dissappeared with the Tesseract after Avengers 1

Unless these are alternate timeline scenarios, but it seemed the Ancient one discussion discredited that?

With all that said... I absolutely loved the movie despite all this.

Saw it only once so, I recall them saying the 'future' they came from was their past, something like that anyway. It sounded to me any changes in the past would not change the time they came from, any changes would just create alternate timelines. Since the Time Stone comes back to the Ancient One, nothing changes there going forward. However my memory, the main thrust I took from their time travel talk was changes in the past wouldn't change their future. That Thanos of the past is just another Thanos coming at them. The Avenger's snappy guy still snapped. Sure it's bollocks but I haven't seen a time travel story that wasn't.
