So, do all Marvel Universe romances end unconsummated, with the male superhero left alone in a robot aircraft to presumably crash somewhere in the ocean?

Only in Whedon stories.

No -- though apparently he did do some uncredited re-writes on it and Thor, IIRC.

Well, I thought Spader did have menace in his voice; I was just confused and annoyed with the notiont that the crazy bot that wants to kill all humanity is also hell-bent on becoming a daddy as quickly as possible. It might not bother me as much on subsequent viewings, but it didn't quite work for the first time.If the idea is he's too young and overwhelmed with sentience to think clearly, maybe it was a mistake for the quintessentially self-assured Spader to voice him; maybe a child's voice would have been more appropriate and scarier.
Indeed. Would have made much more sense and actually felt threatening. Quippy Spader-bot did not project even a tiny bit of menace.
The whole Widow is a weaker character in AoU controversy from certain groups is ridiculous!

Particularly as Tony wasn't there to guide the beginning stages of Ultron's consciousness.

Did Ultron want to become a daddy? I thought he was creating Vision as a new body for himself.
I'm also wondering whether the storylines are getting too convoluted. I've watched EVERY movie in the MCU, and enjoyed them *ALL*, but even I'm starting to lose track of story threads.
For example, when they said SHIELD was no more, I was like, "Did this happen during an episode of Agents of SHIELD?" My brother in law, who was part of the group that saw it tonight, told me it happened during Winter Soldier, which I had forgotten even though I *loved* Winter Soldier.
I didn't remember Natasha and Banner having a thing either.
In the old days, they had an "Intermission" card for the audience to take a break. Today, there are no longer Intermissions. Instead, scenes like the one at the Safe House in the middle have replaced it. The part where there's no action, random stroking of egos among characters, while I go off and take a quick bathroom to ensure I don't miss out on any cool ass-kicking or story development.
In this one, I wasn't clear on why it was so important that the Avengers assemble.
Well, they'd already assembled prior to the movie's opening to track down Loki's scepter, and maybe take down a few other baddies (Tony refers to "busting arms dealers", though that may not be an exact quote.)In this one, I wasn't clear on why it was so important that the Avengers assemble.
Because SHIELD no longer exists, and because Ultron threatens the world.
SHIELD doesn't exist, does Phil Coulson know that? And really you could see the beginnings of a relationship between Nat and Bruce in the first Avengers movie, Joss Whedon hadn't had a chance to work in it bewteen the two movies.
