"Avatar" Sequels Delayed...does anybody care?

Do people hate Avatar now because it made so much money? This was the first modern movie to use immersive 3D. It was nominated for Oscars. People went and saw it multiple times. It's the second best selling home video of all time. Now it's like "Meh, Dances With Wolves in Space." I think the sequels are going to do pretty well at the box office. I certainly hope it doesn't go the way of Sin City; get a huge following and then not capitalize on a sequel for a decade.

I didn't hate it because it made so much money. I didn't like it because the characters were thin, the plot was meh. I will give it credit though: it's been the only 3D movie that was completely worth it. The 3D was great.

But, "unobtainium?" Ugh. Maybe one less CGI creature and a little more time on naming shit.

The reason it is named unobtainium is a knowing pun by the characters in the film.

At a meta- level I would think it's a knock of some of the worst wankery of Star Trek and the like.

I saw a cake once, it was beautifully decorated, truly impressive, one of the best I've ever seen, then I tried it and it was ... okay. Not bad but I'm not thinking about that cake wishing I had the chance to eat it again.
Avatar is that cake!

Avatar is also Dances with Wolves doing a Captain Planet plot, sprinkled with slightly racist cliches ... in space. But I like the cake story better.

True.

Everyone I know thought it was 'borrowed' from Dances With Wolves when it came out. But nowhere near as good.

I didn't hate it, and it did look fantastic, but there's more to a good film than that.

I think my reaction to Avatar was the same reaction I've had to pretty much every single one of Cameron's films. It looks great and makes a nice attempt at a great story but ultimately is filled with corny lines and shallow characters. Some of his movies may work better than others (Terminator 2 or Aliens) but they all share the same faults. The thing is, both financially and effects-wise he hits it out of the park every time.

He's made two of my very favourite films - The Terminator and Aliens. Neither was great purely because of the effects.

He's not done anything else I like anywhere near as much. Terminator two was good, but not a patch on the original, and nothing since has hit those heights...

I like the original Terminator, but for me it has always fallen under the great B-movie style of film making.

Well it was a B-movie, no?
About six and a half million IIRC, which even for '84 was pretty low. For comparison E.T., Poltergeist, Star Wars & Wrath of Khan were all around the 10-13 million mark and I think Raiders & Ghostbusters were 20 & 30 million respectively.

The point being, look at what Cameron did with such limited resources. Then look at what he did later with a *lot* more resources.

I tend to agree that the writing in his movies can be a little on the shallow side, but in the very least there's usually a solid concept behind the scripts, there's usually a lot of heart and overall he casts very well. 'The Abyss' is probably the one with the loftiest ideals, though you'd only really know it if you watched the 'Special Edition' cut. Next to the likes of Michael Bay who has a similar reputation for pretty looking movies with the depth of a teaspoon, I'd take a Cameron movie any day (and twice on Thursdays.) ;)

Not sure if this was posted yet: James Cameron announces four 'Avatar' sequels

Fox ended its CinemaCon presentation in Las Vegas on Thursday with a surprise guest: James Cameron.
The filmmaker announced that there will be four "Avatar" sequels, not the previously planned three. "We have decided to embark on a truly massive cinematic process," he said.

Cameron said each of the four sequels will be able to stand alone, but will together create a saga. His goal is to release "Avatar 2" at Christmas 2018 and then a new film in 2020, 2022 and 2023.

What would be Ritchious Cool is, if Avatar 10: The Ultimate would allow filmgoers to actually immerse themselves in the Avatar Pods, and experience the movie as one of the characters!

We/Cameron ought to have the Technology by then!

It's obviously nowhere close to the same thing, but with VR being the big thing right now, I wouldn't be surprised if we end up with a Avatar VR game/experience by the time the next one is out.

I enjoyed the first Avatar film, but I'm not really looking forward to any sequels.

They are planning on filming all four at once. This is going to be a disaster. If you do 1-2 movies at a time you can see the final product and make changes and evolve the story naturally.

But he probably realizes that if they don't film all four at once than they won't get made after the second one bombs. ;)

The first movie was beautiful and thats why people saw it, but it had no plot or storyline anyone cared for. So no one is going "let's get 4 more!!!!"
You're certainly taking it on yourself to speak for a lot of people there.
He really isn't. If you're paying attention at all the last year or two on Movie Site boards, Entertainament News threads, You Tube comments etc you'll see he's only echoing what is a true sentiment by many. It's more than anecdotal but true it's hard to gauge how loud that voice/thought truly is, but it's there in quantity.

Possibly. Except people said the same thing about shooting a film in 3D before Avatar came out. There were also dire predictions that 'Titanic' would bomb with it being the most expensive movie of all time in it's day (though part of that was probably due to 'Waterworld' still being fresh in people's memories.)

The point is, Cameron has a track record for audacious undertakings that everybody says isn't going to work *and he keeps pulling it off.*
This could turn out to be where it all came crashing down, but for now I'm going to give him the benefit of the doubt. He's certainly earned it.
