I live in Illinois. We don't have "altitude."

And yeah, the reason they're illegal here is that they damage the roads.

i have no idea what these are called in english, but in some areas here in sweden they have even banned these tires. the reasons vary from environmental friendliness, to health hazards and as stated earlier. damaging to the roads.

Interesting. Where I live, chains are mandatory past a certain altitude when there's snow. You don't leave them on when you're not in the snow, of course.

As for cables, I found them nearly useless. They're why I took the step of shelling out for the Spikes-Spiders.

Same here. Chains/cables/studded tires are mandatory above about 6000 feet in winter weather conditions. I did the cables because my car at the time didn't have the clearance required in the wheelwells for actual chains. The cables worked well for me, though if they were available I would have bought a set of what you have.

I'm also disappointed this wasn't about a breakthrough in automatic sock technology. And I'm absolutely the wrong guy to ask about snow tires--our last snowfall here was two years ago.
