Hmm. To me, only the Rankin-Bass version had sufficiently hairy feet. Not the Hildebrandt paintings. Certainly not Bakshi's version (not that he got any damn thing right*). Not the few clips and stills I've seen of Peter Jackson's movies.I remember being shattered when I finally saw illustrations of Tolkien's hobbits.

* Among other things Bakshi got profoundly wrong, Reginald Pikedevant could get some mileage out of "Just xerograph your reference films and call it rotoscoping"!)
