AUGUST/SEPTEMBER WRITING CHALLENGE – The Losers

Gibraltar

Rear Admiral
Rear Admiral
Here's the last toast of the evening, here's to those who still believe
All the losers will be winners, all the givers shall receive
Here's to trouble-free tomorrows, may your sorrows all be small
Here's to the losers, here's to the losers, here's to the losers
Bless them all!

~Here's to the Losers (Songwriters: Segal / Wells)

Typically, our characters overcome overwhelming odds to fulfill near-impossible assignments, or to defeat implacable enemies. But what happens when they fail? How do they, as individuals or crews, handle it when they can’t accomplish the mission, can’t stop the enemy, or simply disappoint someone who was counting on them? Admiral Kirk opined that, “How we deal with death is at least as important as how we deal with life.”

The same could be said of how we cope with failure.

Rules and stipulations:

1. Write about a situation where a character or characters fail to reach a goal, accomplish an assignment, defeat a foe, or simply lose at something of importance.

2. There are no restrictions on length, only the proviso that some readers may not be up for powering through a novella.

3. Contest ends around September 30th, unless an extension is requested. I will post specific times (in PST).

4. Voting will last one week and the results will be official on October 7th.

Not every challenge is everyone's cup of tea. Some may move you to write, others not so much. That's why we have them frequently. :)
Yeah, except for that one year...

I digress. You didn't mention whether the story had to be written specifically for this contest or if older stories can be used. Apparently, this can mean the difference in the number of entries we get.

Ah, my apologies. You may submit a previously written story that meets the criteria listed above.

Hmmm. Meaty fodder to consider. I'll have to think about this one for a little while and see what I can do. I maaaay have an idea.

Oy, dilemma! I have an older piece that I think would fit the bill perfectly (with a wee bit of editing), but on the other hand I want to push the creative muscles...

Just for clarification: I'm assuming voting ends on October 7th.

Have an idea for something that has started writing itself, though not sure if I'll be able to get it done before I jet off to New Zealand next week.
