Contest: ENTER August 2020 Art Challenge — “Not Trek”

I don't know what to do, because I want to do everything!! So far I've thought of doing Space Battleship Yamato, Mighty Orbots, Battlestar Galactica, Buck Rogers in the 25th Century and Transformers, and whatever choice I make has to be something within my limited artistic capability.

I wish I could do what I did over in the Fiction forum ages ago when the contest winner hauled off and made the next challenge "Anything but Star Trek" and I entered a GI*JOE: A Real American Hero story. There wasn't a genre restriction on that one though, and GIJOE isn't, strictly speaking, sci-fi.

Gotta think on this some more.

I would accept GI Joe as sci-fi. It's near future stuff but they have a LOT of gadgets we don't yet

- I had the same problem, but @Michael suggested actually doing everything, so that's what i'm going to do - a scene featuring bits & bobs from various sci-fi properties. Why don't you do something similar? :)
... and GIJOE isn't, strictly speaking, sci-fi.
- I'm not a GIJoe fan, but from what I remember about the strips at the back of the UK Transformers comics, and the TV cartoon, I agree with @ashefivekay in that there's a sci-fi element to it.

Too ambitious. I'd never be able to fit them all into one scene that made any sense.

You're both right, of course. One of the very first figures was a "laser rifle trooper," so I guess it fits.

So now I just have to decide which characters to include and how to stage them...

For my money G.I. Joe can count as sci-fi, too, sure. :bolian:

I had a look back at some older contests the other day and dude, your art is awesome! Would love to see you enter.

Thank you. I appreciate that, but I know my limitations and have yet to truly overcome them. Then again, that's what practice is for, right? ;)

Y'all still got more that a week to submit an entry. I'm really looking forward to see what you are working on. :)

"Coming to a theater...uh, nowhere, 'Freighter Tails: the Misadventures of Mzzkiti'!"

You're probably thinking, "Hey, Bill! You were supposed to based your selection upon a 'non Star Trek' science fiction property!" Well, I did, it's a movie poster styled render based upon a web comic I co-created with Paul Scott Gibbs and illustrated almost 20 years ago. In case anybody is wondering, Yes, I consulted with our illustrious and illustrating moderator, Micheal before forging ahead with this composition. I was more than willing to go with a mainstream entertainment property, "Doctor Who", but once I explained the idea between the concept and he perused the strips, he actually urged me to go with this. Thanks, Michael!

So, what happened with the web comic? Alas, Paul, who actually scripted the installments, unexpectedly died not quite a year into production. I tried to make a go of it alone, but I guess my heart wasn't really in it. Without Paul's input, it turned into a "chore", at least as a continuing narrative, but I still "muck" with the characters and concepts in a recreational basis.

Who exactly is Mzzkiti? Well, if you click upon the link in my signature line, it will take you to the comic itself. Yeah, though I haven't posted anything new in years (I can no longer access the directories to post anything), I do maintain the domain. (Sorry for the small size, but the strip was designed when the average screen resolution was only 800 pixels wide.)

As I staged this in Poser, many of the elements are purchased a shared items. I'm including credits because without those items, I could not have presented this...at least a polygon based digital render.

Wow, I love it, Redfern! The characters look great and interesting. And the layout is amazing. I‘m happy you went with your own personal sci-fi universe. :bolian:

Thanks, Michael! I decided to stage it a bit like a movie lobby poster, so there's a quite a bit of (arguably "forced") symmetry. I recalled promotional images that caught my eye as a kid, particularly "The Green Slime" (which "lied" to us by showing a kaiju sized creature that never appeared in the movie itself) and other "sensationalistic" compositions.

Thanks, @Cyfa ! Well, I didn't assemble every element just for this composition. Mzzkiti is saved as a figure with clothes and hair, same for Dee Rainged and Droulin Phahnboi. I loaded each into the "scene", positioning and posing them , starting from a catalog of pose presets that I then change and adjust for best effect in a given composition. Yeah, even the individual tentacles of the Dahna'vahn Brains can be twisted and coiled, but for this piece, simply turning and tilting their bodies was enough to imply different poses. Everything was done "in render", no postwork, even the "ray" from the blaster.. "Particle render physics"? Nope, just 3 intersecting planar "primitives" using transparency maps and ambient settings.

Applause, applause, vociferous applause!!!:techman::bolian:

So it wasn't where I wanted it to be, but it's finished, my star wars old republic cruiser, one of those obscure random ships you always see in the background lol "The Fellsword Light Battle Cruiser"

Very cool! I know, different universe and all, but I see shades of the Bok'nor/Merchantman in this, but that always kinda looked like it belonged with Star Wars anyway.

I'm probably going to miss the deadline on this one. I got started on the initial sketch too late and the finishes always take more time than I expect. I'll try to rush it anyway.

After a spot of hand-wringing and teeth gnashing, I've decided that this is my piece for the challenge:

I remember having both of those as a youngster (along with others) though I think there were only two stores locally that tended to stock them:D
