August 08 Challenge - "The Unexpected Guest"

I have an idea, too, but it's kind of silly and I'm pretty busy with other stuff at the moment.

If a writing challenge is offered and no one enters, does a tree fall on a cute puppy in the forest? Would the Pope shoot the bear?

:wtf:

*Sound of scuffling as TLR is dragged bodily from his keyboard, ranting about Elvis, Shatner and deadlines.*

(Sorry - it seems I've mismanaged my caffeine intake this morning. :alienblush:)

Is there a minimum word count?

Well, there's a maximum word count of 3000. I think the minimum word count is one.

Interestingly, I found a chronological error in what I'm writing-but once I took the hat off of the bear it all worked out.(I said it was silly!)

Remember, we need entries or the puppy gets it in the head with a falling tree! :klingon: The bear ain't bluffing!

Silly is the theme for this month I think! I have the plot all worked out for mine and I'm going crazy with frustration because I just cannot get the time to write the damn thing!

you're not supposed to enter previously written material.

i have an entry in the works. hopefully i'll get it finished over the weekend...

So... they can be really short, the "guest" cannot be a Star Trek character... can we do crossovers?

Any other rules? (I've never taken part in any of these challenges before)

Timewalker-if you are meaning like Star Wars/Star Trek I'm guessing its allowed but remember the main theme: unexpected guest. Rules? We don't need no stinkin' rules, man.

If you could put spaces between changes in dialogue those of us who read nearly everything posted in this forum would be grateful-for a reference go check out a Xeris story(as I think there are a couple floating around right now) as a structural guide. And for your own safety-some of these guys will let almost anything go EXCEPT scrunchy dialogue! For that, they will reach through the fiber-optic cables and strangle you, laughing all of the while.

Star Trek/Star Wars crossovers will never happen in any of my stories. :scream:

I just wanted to know if crossovers are allowed in general... I've written some combinations you would never expect!

Yep, I know the basic structure of posting stories on the 'Net. I used to compete in -- and later host -- the Iron Pen Competition on a gaming forum I belonged to some years back. The idea of that is that two competitors have 48 hours to write a short story with a minimum of 750 words, using a mystery theme they don't get to know about until the start of the 48 hours. The person who started this modeled it loosely on the Iron Chef TV show. And when I took over hosting the competition, I had to win the right to do that -- by getting more votes for my story than my opponent.

Having a whole month to write a story sounds... almost decadent. But I'll give it a try. I take it the basic idea for this one is that you start out with a Star Trek story and introduce an unexpected guest of some sort? Where do we post the stories? (sorry if I've missed seeing a rules list somewhere...)

Don't worry - the rules have never been written down except when people ask questions!

To enter a story, create a new thread in this forum with that story as the first post and then post in this challenge thread with a link to your story thread (clear so far? ;) )

Crossovers are definitely allowed! The bizarrer the better as far as I'm concerned.

And yes, the theme for this month's challenge is as set out by TheLoneRedshirt in the first post of this thread - write a Trek story which involves an unexpected guest somewhere along the line. When and where and how and who are up to you!

Good luck!

Oh yeah, crossovers are fine. The only exception is no ST/ST crossovers - no TOS meeting TNG crews, etc. Otherwise, anything goes!

If I were writing one (which I'm not), I'd do a Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy crossover with Arthur Dent, Ford Prefect, their towels, et. al. crossing path with Picard and company. That could be fun!

Any takers? 'Course, you do whatever rings your bell! :)

Sadly, the crossover that is most on my mind these days doesn't include Star Trek. But it is a very unlikely combination. :vulcan:
