attention girls: embrace your inner...

But how can you not appreciate the simple beauty of a flower?

I can appreciate it, I just think it dies off way to fast to be useful. Smell it three times and poof. Or maybe I'm just horrible with flowers. :D

Another way to make them last longer is to replace the water regularly.

If I recall correctly, the coin should be copper since it's supposed to nourish the flowers.

^ Disillusion if you do the bleach/sugar and clean out the water regularly as Laren is suggesting ...they can last over a week...at least.... depending on the flower.

I know. I also add nutrients, depending on which flower it is (or what flower is the dominant bunch in the bouquet). Longest I've ever had was 2 weeks.

And if you really need to make a gift last you could dry the flowers and put them in an album, eh? ;)

And they sell excellent flower presses actually so you don't even have to go through all that. They look as fresh as the day they are picked.

You use the microwave to dry them out!

^ To be honest...I don't press them...but I've seen the presses in the gardening magazines and catalogs. I'm telling you...if my 25 year old self knew that my 37 year old self was into flowers like this...my younger self would be very surprised about this hobby of mine. Sometimes you don't find what your true passions are until later in life.

Buying them from the local store, they never last that long for me no matter what I try. I sometimes do the floral decorations for events though, and when I do that I get them online in bulk and do the arrangements myself. I've had those easily last a month without showing a sign of wilting. And that's without taking care of them properly! It's quite amazing really.

Well, since you're reading gardening magazines you're certainly way ahead of me. I'm still struggling to find another leafy green plant for my living room that will not suffer from the intense sunlight in there. One of the plants I have sitting there is regularly going all brown, poor thing!

...so what's wrong with getting her flowers?

Flowers are a lovely idea for a birthday ~ as it's for a 50th could you get 50 blooms, carnations or similar in the affordable range? And perhaps an interesting vase to keep, and encourage more flower buying in the future :)

Your job sounds fantastically interesting, Kestra! You seem to do so many different things. Are you a general event planner, or just weddings?

Hi K'ehleyr! Can't be fussed with trying to find the other thread, how's the situation with your son?

Try a snake plant...they are really hard to kill. Philodendron too -- they take a beating. I wish I could think of more but I haven't had houseplants in over 10 years because of my cats. I can think of quite a few perennials and annuals though! They have this wonderful plant stand with lights as well but it's like over 300 bucks and I just always have more pressing things to spend my money on. But someday I will have houseplants again...I miss them. :wah:

General, though more of my business comes from weddings and wedding-related events. The name of my business has "Weddings" in the name but I'll plan just about anything, really.

I'm actually going back to school and looking at a different field entirely, so we'll see what happens! I'm at least finishing out the year with my business. I'm far too fickle for my own good.

Change is good for the soul. For you it's jobs, me it was places to live. Think I've settled now though - at least until the kids are grown, then the wanderlust might start again...

It's good to have a skill like event planning that you can always fall back on if you're between jobs in a different career - I'm sure you have a lot of satisfied customers who'll be happy to pass more work your way!

If I weren't so attached to my family and had a husband of my own, I think I'd be a wanderer in a geographical sense, too. I have trouble settling down. I refused to even discuss marriage for about the first five years of dating my husband. And I do get restless and want to relocate every now and again. Right now we're working on a move to the city. I wanted to move cross-country, but that's not realistic.

Yeah, I mean I'm lucky that I have the freedom to explore different options. I want to do it while I don't have children or pets and whatnot. But there's always a backup plan!

Thanks Trample ~ I think we did catch up re: son :)

Kestra ~ you're so right to do what you want to do before getting tied down :techman:

Can I ask all you girls about engagement rings...

Did you choose your own? Were you surprised by your man? Did he chose a ring you love? (If you're not engaged/married then please do the 'if' thing.)

Reason ~ I got engaged in May and chose my ring. Parked man in pub, was given a budget and investigated the Lanes in Brighton. I am delighted with my ring ~ 3 months on I'm still gazing at it.

This pleased us both but is it the romantic way of doing it ~ or the sensible way?

Ooooh, congrats! I think it's totally up to the couple. I didn't choose my ring; my guy went on his own. He took my sister the first time, then went back himself and chose it. I had told him I didn't even need a ring! Of course once I had it, I couldn't stop looking at it. Such a girl.

If a woman has something particular in mind, I think it makes sense to at least look at rings together. I mean, if a guy is spending that much money, it should be something she will like! That said, the woman has to be reasonable too and I know I would've been happy with just about anything.

Have you guys set a date?
