Attended the premiere - no spoilers

^^^ We probably WILL hear a few negative reviews from reasonable "non-ranters" who did attend the premiere...
...It's only natural, since tastes vary greatly, especially in even what reasonable people expect from a Trek show.

Agreed. That reddit post wasn't one of those. when somebody has a comment in their review of "the best costume was an andorian but they were blue which means NuTrek" they lose a bit of credibility to me.

I'll listen to reasoned non-ranter comments about it... while ignoring the "ranters"

Blew Orville out of the sky IMHO.
What does one have to do with the other?
I agree that the "niche met" in my entertainment needs are different for what The Orville will provide to me and what I think Discovery will provide, but at the same time I think I would be able to say I "Overall enjoyed one more than the other". From what I've see of The Orville so far, I will probably enjoy Discovery more.

I think the Orville is "just okay", but so far that's all it is. And when I say it's "just okay", that has nothing to do with it being a comedy. I can equally enjoy comedies fr what they are as much as I can enjoy dramas for what they are. It's not like I would say "dramas are always going to be better because they are more serious than comedies".

That is to say, the seriousness/non-seriousness of the tone of a show does not matter in my overall enjoyment of that show. If The Orville was a better-done comedy (and it does have the roots of a good show, so there is hope), it could rank higher on my list of favorite shows than some lesser-quality serious dramas.

So potentially if The Orville was really good, it could have "blown Discovery out of the water". Therefore conversely, it is not invalid to say that "Discovery (potentially) could blow The Orville out of the water".

I'm sure you're right. A guy on Facebook said he sat next to a guy who was already dumping on it before it began and afterward was crowing "see, I was right, it's terrible", prompting eyerolls from everyone around him.

But nothing pleases everyone. I expect some who hoped to like it might not have. But we'll all know for ourselves soon enough.

Episode titles on-screen? If so, are they in the upper right-hand corner, the center, or wherever it doesn't block stuff?

So...is there a voice over at the beginning of the theme? :-)
I would say there isn't. The "space, the final frontier" thing is for the Enterprise only, and it was smart of the producers to realize that adapting the speech for the other series would be cheesy as hell.

"Space...the final frontier. This is the placement of the starbase Deep Space Nine. Its interminable mission: to sit at the mouth of a wormhole. To wait and see what comes through it. To boldly sit where ships come and go."

"Space...the final frontier. These are the voyages of, well, the starship Voyager. Its never-ending mission: to get home. To seek out new methods of shortening our journey. To boldly attempt to get back to where we've already been."

On one of the Facebook DS9 groups, I wrote a version of what I thought the speech could have been:

"Space, an inifinite sea of stars, in which many ports serve as refuge for the tempest-tost. This is the calling of Deep Space Nine, her continuing mission: to provide safe haven to the tired, poor, and huddled masses, and to prosecute their myriad, even conflicting needs, to keep the peace in this corner off the galaxy."

And a VOY one:

"Starfleet's captain's oath begins 'Space the Final Frontier.' Through circumstances beyond our control, a Starfleet and a Maquis crew must cooperate to survive. Together, we'll seek out new life and new civilizations, boldly going where no two crews have gone before."

A few thoughts.

Loved the opening titles and music. No more “faith” grumbles. Fantastic. And no Kurtzman doesn’t talk over it!

Not techno babble heavy. Yes, the warp core is mentioned. And it matters.

Feeling even more positive the day after.

I know the CBS AA is annoying but it looks worth it. Shoot it’s pocket change. Of course I’ve been following this show for 51 years!

I'll be honest, I did not truly expect all the positive reactions last night. I figured there would be a few who weren't so pleased. Considering that it seems like people are much quicker to tweet when they dislike something or were disappointed by it, I fully expected a few tweets like "Trekkies aren't gonna like what I have to say about it" or "well, that was two hours of my life I'll never get back" or something.

To be honest, I think these immediate reactions tell us more than a slew of professional reviews would have. I'm trying to put into words why that is...it feels like these reactions are authentic while a lot of reviews feel manufactured. There, that's what I'm trying to say.

Exactly this. I was watching the #startrekdiscovery feed last night and not one "meh" post. It was all overwhelmingly positive.

All of that makes me very happy.

Who are we all kidding, we are all going to watch it. It's still Star Trek, regardless of what they do to it. If we won't consider watching it, then we might as well just cancel our TrekBBS accounts and stay home.

We'd be remiss and shortsighted to be so close-minded as to not give it a chance. Being open to new ideas is part of what makes Star Trek what it is.

That's like saying First Contact was better than Galaxy Quest.[/QUOTE]

They’re essentially competing for viewers. So it matters for viewership and economics. And critical press. IMHO Discovery is far better.

[scotty_voice]There should be no tribble at all[/scotty_voice]

(Actually there will be at least one tribble, according to the latest preview video).

But if there is a tribble in Discovery, then what's the point of the introduction to tribbles in "The Trouble With Tribbles"?
