Ridiculous. Stupid as all heck. This is reactive nonsense. The guy wasn't dressed up when he entered the theater. He left, put on his gear then came back in. What the f*ck does this have to do with costumes?

Well, most responses are just chasing our tail (or the horse done bolted, or whatever phrase fits). We can try to guard against copycats for a period, but we can almost guarantee that the next truly beserk attack will be nothing like the previous one. It could be a shooter in the parking lot going after people lined up outside, or someone throwing gasoline bombs at all the exit doors, or ramming his truck into black Friday shoppers, or opening the sea cocks on a cruise ship.

You could even argue that they shouldn't change a thing at Aurora and it would be the safest theater in America, because lightning never strikes twice in the same place.

Identities Of Ten Deceased Victims Of Aurora Shooting Emerge

This morning news reports began to emerge that show the identities of the victims of Thursday’s terrifying mass murder in Aurora, Colorado. This writer trembles with effort to find the right words with which to present these unfortunate people with lives cut short needlessly, if not thoughtlessly, by an apparent madman.

Alex Sullivan was 27. He was married. He had a job with Red Robin. ”He was a very, very good young man,” said Sullivan’s uncle, Joe Loewenguth. “He always had a smile, always made you laugh. He had a little bit of comic in him. Witty, smart. He was loving, had a big heart.” Alex was at the theater with a group of friends that night to celebrate his birthday.

Micayla (Cayla) Medek was 23. Her personal Facebook account shows us just how much this world suffers, without Cayla. From her FaceBook info page: “My name is Micayla, but everyone usually calls me Cayla. I’m a simple independant girl who’s just trying to get her life together while still having fun.”
The second pulls my heartstrings, it was her favorite quote: “We’re all a little weird. And life’s a little weird. And when we find someone whose weirdness is compatible with ours, we join up in mutual weirdness and call it love.”

Jessica Ghawi, also known as the blogger Jessica Redfield, was 24. On June 2nd she had missed, by only a matter of minutes, a shooting in a food court in a mall in Toronto where five people were shot, and two people killed. In her blog entry of June 5th, “Late Night Thoughts on the Eaton Center Shooting” Jessica described the scene, “It’s not like in the movies when you see someone shot and they’re bleeding continuously from the wound. There was no blood flowing from the wounds, I could only see the holes. Numerous gaping holes, as if his skin was putty and someone stuck their finger in it. Except these wounds were caused by bullets. Bullets shot out of hatred.”
In her final paragraph, Jessica says something haunting, “I wish I could shake this odd feeling from my chest….The same feeling that made me leave the Eaton Center. The feeling that may have potentially saved my life.”

John Larimer was a 27. He was a Sailor who trained at the Great Lakes Naval Academy and was a Petty Officer 3rd Class had been assigned to Buckley Air Force Base in Aurora in October 2011, where he worked as a cryptologic technician. “I am incredibly saddened by the loss of Petty Officer John Larimer; he was an outstanding shipmate,” Cmdr. Jeffrey Jakuboski, Larimer’s commanding officer, said in a statement early Saturday, according to the Chicago Tribune. “A valued member of our Navy team, he will be missed by all who knew him. My heart goes out to John’s family, friends and loved ones, as well as to all victims of this horrible tragedy.”

Veronica Moser was six years old. Her 25 year old mother was also shot in the throat and the abdomen. She remains paralyzed in critical condition and hasn’t been told of her daughter’s death. Veronica’s great aunt speaks for her family, “This is just a nightmare right now. It’s a nightmare.” Veronica was supposed to start swimming lessons this Tuesday. “She was excited about life as she should be. She’s a 6-year-old girl,” her great-aunt said

Matt McQuin was 27 his last living act was to shield his girlfriend from the hail of bullets sprayed by the gunman behind the Aurora, Colo., multiplex massacre. Matt’s girlfriend Samantha was shot, but survived, thanks to his quick and selfless thinking. “He was a great outgoing person,” a co-worker at the Colorado Target super store told the News. “We lost a great person and we still can’t picture or realize that he’s gone.”

Jon Blunk, a young veteran and hero was also at the movie with his girlfriend, Jansen Young. When the shooting started, he shoved her beneath a seat and covered her with his body. Young said that it wasn’t until she tried to get out of the theater herself that she realized Jon was lifeless. “I tried to shake him and was saying his name, and like Jon, Jon we’ve got to go,” she said. “I kind of poked my head up at that point and realized oh my gosh, nobody’s in here, it’s just us. There were like a few other heads here and there I could see leaving the theater but really the theater was empty…that’s when I got out and I kept thinking that was…oh my gosh, I think Jon just took a bullet for me.”

Jesse Childress was a 29 year old Air Force reservist. She worked as a cyber systems operator.

Alex Teves was 24. A friend who was with Teves in the theater posted on Twitter that he had been killed. “Alex Teves was one of the best men I ever knew. The world isn’t as good a place without him,” wrote the friend, identified as Caitlin. “Alex Teves was a Arizona basketball fan, loved Spider-Man, was an amazing therapist, and died a hero…He could make us all laugh with his Gollum impression. I’ll never forget that.”

Alexander “A.J.” Boik was 17. He was a distributor at Organo Gold, a coffee company, and went to Gateway High School in Aurora. His friend, and girlfriend made it to the lobby, only to find that AJ didn’t make it with them. A Facebook page has been set up in his honor where one friend posted,” RIP Aj Boik, you were such a great friend.”

May each of these individuals rest in peace.

Okay, looks like AMC has released a clarification. Seems reasonable.

3rd update: July 21, 2012, 5 p.m. CDT — Contrary to media reports, costumes are not banned, but we will not admit guests with face-concealing masks and we will not allow fake weapons in the buildings. We want all our guests to feel comfortable at our theatres and we will be closely monitoring

^Clearly this costume is too frightening for movie goers.

The names of the last two victims were Gordon Cowen, age 51 and the oldest of the victims, and Rebecca Wingo. When the police state that the shooter planned this for months, I feel they are stating the obvious. Within hours of learning the shooting, I had come to the conclusion that he had planned this. I feel that he had to have visited the theatre on a scouting mission, and I wouldn't be surprised if cops are able to learn when he visited and how many times he frequented the theatre. I am suspicious of the call he received in the auditorium prior to the shooting. Who called him, and what did that call signify to him?

Which pretty much matches already existing policies, in my area any way.

He was employed at the theatre, so I'd say he was quite familiar with it. Likewise, I'm sure cops already know exactly how often he was there. All they'd have to do is look at his work schedule.

Are we sure he was an employee at the theater? I haven't read anything to confirm that, and if he was, he wouldn't have bought a ticket, would he? Also, I read that he had been unemployeed for a long while and this was part of the reason why he just snapped.

My concern with the unemployment angle is all the hardware he used. If he did use an AR15, that's not a cheap piece of junk. Neither is the Glock. Plus, ammo, shotgun, ordnance back at his apt, etc. it wouldn't have taken him months to plan this. More like years, just to afford it all!

Even so, you don't make much working at a movie theater either.

While it's true most theatres allow employees to see movies free, I imagine there may be exceptions to that. And midnight showing on opening night of a movie as hyped as The Dark Knight Rises may have been such an exception where even employees might have to pay, though I'm guessing there. I suppose as staff he could devise any bullshit excuse to get into the theatre.

And even if he was indeed unemployed prior to this incident, that doesn't rule out the possibility that he was employed at the theatre at some point in the past.

The only place I've heard he might be an employee was on this board. Everywhere else has said he bought a ticket to get in.

I'm sure all our thoughts are with the families of the victims of this horrific crime.

Sympathies as well to any board members in the town, not nice to have something like this on your doorstep.

I'm wondering if the claim that he called himself the Joker is going to stand or if that's one of those things that get erroneously stated in the madness and confusion in the aftermath. It'd be good if he didn't really think as such, what happened can't be undone, but it would be good if it didn't taint fandom going forward.

Clint Van Zandt has called the shooter "a dark-Treekie like person".
I don't know about anybody else here, but as a Trekkie I don't appreciate having our fandom associated with something like this. Especially since stuff like this goes completely against the kinds of messages Trek uses.

I really hate when people decide to use something like this for their own agendas or associate this with religion or fandom when it's just unfounded. I saw another guy (Via an article posted on Facebook, but I forgot the link) almost immediately after I heard it saying that this was part of rejecting Judeo-Christian values and speaking as a Christian, I was offended by that. People are quick to pass judgement and it makes them look really really dumb.

From what I've read, he's staying in character as the Joker and trying to spit on the guards.

I can't find confirmation that he was a theater employee, and I'm sure every news story would mention it prominently if it was true, so that probably came from an erroneous report.

I've seen conflicting information on whether he used a .223 AR-15 or a .22LR that looked like an AR-15, but the police seem to confirm that he was using .223 ammunition and that his gun jammed very quickly (AR-15's are notorious for jamming), forcing him to switch to alternate weapons. However these same police say he had a 100-round drum and that such a magazine would've allowed him to fire 50 to 60 shots a minute - derp, off by a factor of 10.

At least one witness told police that someone else let the shooter in the theater door, pointing to the existence of an accomplice. A man texted the police demanding the perp's immediate release shortly after the shooting, so SWAT teams staked out the house of this "person of interest #2", who turns out to have been in the same university program as the perp and probably knew him. Nobody has seen PoI#2 since a few hours before the shooting, so unless they've picked him up since then, he's in hiding.

ETA: They've interviewed the person of interest, he's no longer considered an active suspect, and he gave them quite a bit more information about the shooter.

There's also still no confirmation that the shooter was a member of the OWS black bloc group.
