I've recently gotten into Assassin's creed, starting from the beginning. I had no idea the series had reached 8 games already!

Game 1 is a lot of fun, even if rather repetitive. As a fan of stealth games like Thief I'm interested to see a totally different take of sneaky gameplay, ie hiding in plain sight, strolling around nonchalantly in a crowd, and avoiding drawing attention to yourself.

Also throwing people off rooftops never gets old.

Game 2 seems an all round improvement - more options, more to do, less of a repeating pattern in your activities.

Not sure I care for the "present day" bits. I realise the let the series have both a recurring protagonist, and a series of adventures through history, but they're still a chore.

Yeah, I'm on memory sequence 2 and the cutscenes are choppy as shit. Too bad, because I actually like Arno and the story so far. The parkour is upgraded, but Arno still jumps randomly and does things you don't want him to, just like in the other games. Hopefully they'll patch this game soon.

This fills me with dread for "The Division" in 2015 and continue Ubisoft decline into fighting EA for who can be the biggest asshole. Seriously can we quit with the whole it needs to be out on this date even if not ready bullshit.

Companies get away with sub par games too often these days and you know what, a gaming market crash sounds like a handy thing.

It's pretty baffling to me how much of an issue this is with these games. Other games manage to handle free-running just fine, but I've always had issues with it in the AC games. With as many of them as they've made, you'd think they'd be better at it by now.

Grumpy as I am that I'm not playing "Arkham Knight," which was originally slated to be released last month, I am seriously happy that Rocksteady made the decision and said, "You know what? This game isn't going to be ready then." So while I'd love to be playing it right now, I'll gladly wait until June 2015 if the developers think it needs more work.

It also has me dreading Far Cry 4 next week, since Ubisoft Montreal is doing that one too. How many games can one studio work on at the same time? Off the top of my head, we have Assassin's Creed Unity, Assassin's Creed: Rogue, The Division and Far Cry 4. For sure, they also have next years Assassin's Creed in development (assuming it's only for current gen, and they don't have a second, previous gen entry in development too). That's at least five to six games being worked on at the same time by the same developer. At least Activision splits up their yearly Call of Duty releases between three different studios.

I'm seriously thinking about cancelling my Far Cry 4 preorder and going ahead and getting the Halo: Master Chief Collection and waiting for reviews and gameplay footage for Far Cry :vulcan:

Edit: I just looked into it, and while these five/six games are in development, they've also developed/released The Mighty Quest for Epic Loot, Watch Dogs, Child of Light, AND Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six: Siege in development. That brings the number up to 10 games being developed by the SAME STUDIO. Talk about stretching your resources thin. And it's not even counting the guaranteed DLC offerings for all of these games

What I want to know is... there's a next gen game and there's an old gen game coming out on the same day. Which one "counts" storywise? Which one furthers the story? Surely you can't have to play BOTH of them to know what's next in the larger saga.

From what i read Rogue takes place before Unity and has some direct connection to it through some characters...
Don't know if Rogue takes place before/during/after AC3 though, since Haytham is in it...

Well, the saga seems to play off of very loose connections anyway. I realize I'm still early into playing "Unity," but so far it doesn't seem like you need to know a damn thing about the series beyond what we learned in the Ezio trilogy. There's a little exposition about the bad guy (the "Sage" who showed up in Black Flag), but if you didn't play Black Flag, you wouldn't really feel like you missed anything.

I mean the present day storyline with ?Juno? and/or revelations about the Ancients. That's what I'm into.

I get what you're saying, but honestly, what did Black Flag reveal about Juno? Not much, other than she's still out there. I don't know how much more they're actually willing to reveal at this point until they get closer to their endgame.

Oh I agree, AC4 was a complete waste of time in terms of furthering the primary Ancients storyline. Even the present frame device was literally wandering around a video game developer's office :wtf:

Fortunately the flashback story was very engrossing and the action and mechanics were great or that game would have been as disappointing as AC3. I loved the sailing combat.

Well, now for "Unity" the framing device is that you are playing the Abstergo video game at home. :p

Hot Garbage Warning(tm) still in effect for Unity post day-one patches. Don't buy!

[Digital Foundry] Performance Analysis: Assassin's Creed Unity

The results are certainly interesting, and totally unexpected - enough for us to double-check that the day one patch is installed (it is) and to try the game on another PlayStation 4 (the results are much the same). Barring a few glitches here and there, overall image quality looks like a match between both PS4 and Xbox One. A 900p resolution is confirmed, while anti-aliasing, NPC count and other factors that may impact performance appear to be a complete match. We're especially curious to check out the PC version of the game (not in our hands yet) which may offer some more clues about Unity's overall performance profile.

In the meantime, the reasons behind the resolution parity and Xbox One's performance advantage remain something of a mystery. We know that the Microsoft hardware has more CPU time available, and that animation and AI tend to stress processor hardware heavily. The sheer volume of objects on-screen means that the CPU is working overtime in order to prepare the draw-call data for the graphics hardware. There's also the possibility that the Microsoft compiler may be producing more efficient code than its Sony equivalent, though it's hard to believe that even this combination of potential factors could explain the performance differential we see here in many places. Quite why PS4 isn't rendering at a higher resolution is certainly a bit of a puzzler - in addition to GPU resources, it is worth bearing in mind that memory could be a factor too, especially bearing in mind the complexity of Assassin's Creed Unity's next-gen renderer. Of course, the reality may be rather more mundane: we may simply be looking at a game where the developers ran out of time - there's certainly the sense that both console versions of the game aren't running at their best.

Performance in crowds is atrocious on both platforms.

Wow. Assassin's Creed games have always been a Day One purchase for me, it looks like that's going to change from here on out. I'm definitely going to start waiting on reviews and I'm headed to Gamestop to cancel my Far Cry 4 preorder pending reviews. Ubisoft REALLY needs to get their heads out of their asses and start giving their developers enough time to get these games right.

These are 8 real things I experienced within Assassin’s Creed Unity’s first 2-3 hours:

  • I tried to open a treasure chest, but was told I needed the Assassin’s Creed companion app to open it, with no additional information or context.
  • I tried to open another treasure chest, and was told I needed to sign up for Assassin’s Creed Initiates to open it.
  • I tried to open a third treasure chest, and was told I needed to upgrade Arno’s lockpicking skill.
  • I upgraded Arno’s lockpicking skill, and was told my skill level still wasn’t high enough to open that chest. I gave up.
  • When I paused the game, the second option in the pause menu is an eStore that lets you spend real money on time-saving boosts, bonus in-game currency, and so-on.
  • I saw a woman floating through the air.
  • I heard the same line of dialogue 5 times during an early-game chase mission.
  • I experienced my character flip all around on the side of a building instead of climb through the window like I wanted.
  • None of the above includes subjective elements I found troublesome, including confusing and uninteresting “modern day” moments, trial and error mission design, and soulless NPCs.

The amazing power of the cloud, locking off single-player content and promoting in-app purchases. The future is here!

Even playing on PS4, I haven't experienced nearly as many problems as the rest of the interwebs. The treasure chest thing is kind of annoying, I agree, but it's just there to make you beef up your skill level. Who knows? Maybe there will be more awesome things inside than you can get in the normal treasure chests.

I have experienced some people floating through the air and getting stuck inside walls. That's always annoying.

I haven't had any frame rate issues, though, so that's good. Is there any mention of whether these people bought the game on disc vs. download? I picked it up from Best Buy, and it played right away with no problems.

I'm now in Sequence 5 after several hours of gameplay. It's fine. The story is...meh. I find myself having a really hard time giving a shit about Arno and his tale, but the gameplay is pretty much the same as any other AC (awkward and clumsy).

The thing that bums me out about these newer games is the focus on multiplayer, which I have absolutely zero interest in. Gaming for me is like watching a movie or reading a book; I do it to entertain myself with nobody else around. With such a focus on multiplayer these days, I often feel like the single player campaigns tend to suffer.
