No idea how Gene created the world that he did, but he can't leave. He keeps himself there by obligation. His mind created the world and I assume that should he ever leave it, it would cease to be.
I thought that it was a marvellous hour of television. I must admit, my instant reaction afterwards was a little underwhelming, largely because I'd been spoiled earlier in the day. However, once over that, and the obvious disappointment of no John Simm/Sam, I think it's a superb finale.
The videotape viewings came sooner than I thought, as did the reveal about Gene, I thought that it was going to be a frantic race to Lancashire between Drake and Gene throughout most of the episode.
The final moments were glorious. Admittedly I wasn't mad keen on Keeley Hawes to begin with, but over the last two years she's absolutely nailed the role of Drake. Her ultimate fate was gut-wrenching, but utterly the right way to go. The kind of series that LoM and A2A have been, it had to end bittersweet. To finish in any other way would have been wrong IMO.
Reading an interview with Matt Graham earlier, apparently they did consider bringing John Simm back, and he'd have been there at the RA at the end, doing what Nelson eventually did, welcoming them. They went against that because they thought that it would steel Keeley Hawes' thunder somewhat. Shame really as I think it would have worked quite well if it had been he that revealed that Alex was dead.
I'm just very relieved that the final episode lived up to the series that had gone before it. Seen it more than a few times where a great series has had a poor finale. Thankfully, this was the perfect send-off for the Gene Genie.
So long Guv, you'll be misssed.
